Notes Shared Login in a stand-alone environment

Is it possible to configure the Notes Shared Login service in a stand-alone Notes client–i.e., when running Notes without a Domino server?

Thanks for the reply.

My client installation was initially done in a Domino environment with the old Notes Single Login service. I’ve since uninstalled the old NLS, but the “Log in to Notes using your operating system login” option is greyed out. Do I need to do a fresh install without the old NLS service and create a new user.id file? Or can I somehow remove the password from the current user.id file?

Subject: a couple things to check…

The service may still be running. Try this:

Run the following command from a Windows command prompt:

"sc delete “Lotus Notes Single Logon”

Then restart Windows.

If it’s still grayed out, exit Notes and restart it by right clicking the Notes icon and use “Run as administrator”. Then see if you can select that option.

Subject: Service is not running-problems running as Admin

I checked (using ProcessHacker–a highy enhanced task manager replacement along the lines of Process Explorer) and the service is not running. I tried the sc command anyway. Then tried running as Administrator and received the following errors:

“Unable to access data directory ‘. . .’ using preferences file ‘C:\Lotus\notes.ini’” (This is my notes.ini file location.)

Then, “Notes is still running but not responding. A diagnostic will now run to clean up Notes. Notes will automatically restart after the diagnostic is complete.”

Then “FATAL (1): can’t open c:\Lotus”

I have local Admin privileges on my PC, but not network Admin. (My Notes data is stored on a network drive.) I haven’t seen this error before. So I copied the notes.ini file from C:\Lotus to C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\Notes and set up a shortcut to use this. It ran for an extended period of time and finally gave me a dialog stating:

“Cannot complete the operation. Notes is running but not responding. Please close and restart Notes.”

Then I copied my Notes data down from the network to the local disk. Then set up a modified a IBM Notes shortcut and a notes.ini file to reflect the new data location. This resulted with the same “Cannot complete the operation…” message as above.

Subject: yes…

Yes it can be done. Just install Notes as usual and do NOT choose the older “Notes Single Logon” during install. Once the client is installed and setup, the user can enable Shared Login via
File > Security > user security… Then clicking the box for “Log into Notes with your operating system login”.
