From what I can gather, Notes >6.02 will routinely (1-5 times/day) lockup on dual processor Macs. I can find no official acknowledgment of this anywhere.
Barring a relogin or restart, the only workaround I’ve found is to force-quit Notes, then quit (not force quit) NotesDynConfig (via Apple’s Activity Monitor).
Is Lotus aware of this?
Is a fix possible or planned?

I am in the unfortunate position of having 3 new dual processor G5’s with Panther. We’ve had Notes 6.x running on Jaguar 10.2.3 flawlessly, but have had problems with our dual processor G4.
I am so torqued at Lotus I could spit. They are totally useless when it comes to issues with their own products and the Mac environment. Enough bitching.
Any new advice on this subject is dearly needed. I do feel it may be a dual processor issue.

If Notes is running with the user logged off (F5), it seems stable. Translation: When not doing anything, Notes is stable…
Jay, are you saying your dual G5’s are stable, but the dual G4 is not? Not sure if “unfortunate” is sarcasm or not

I was wrong about stability when logged off (F5). It’s not.Notesdynconfig will still launch a freeze even when logged off.

I’ve been running 6.5.2 for nearly a week now and - touch wood - I’ve not had a single hang or crash in that time. (Previously, it was hanging at least 3 times a day).
As 6.5.2 is the first version to actually be supported on 10.3, it’s looking good that Lotus has fixed this one. Can anybody else confirm/deny?

I’m using Notes client 6.5 (big but free download) and do not see this problem with my DP 2GHz G5 running Mac OS X 10.3.2 Panther or my old beige G3 running 9.2.2. I advise you upgrade to the latest version.
I doubt much energy is being put into the older versions.

This has been a problem with 3 dual machines at our site. All G4’s. Lockups occur between 1-5 times/day on versions 6.02.cf1, 6.0.3, 6.5, and 6.5.1. Two macs run MacOS 10.3.2, one runs 10.2.8.
The fact that they are dual G4’s seems the only commonality I can find.
Lockup is identical on all: Notes is completely frozen, including menus. In all cases, NotesDynConfig was running. Lockup never occurs when NotesDynConfig is inactive.
Two single G5’s and a single G4 in the same environment have NEVER shown this problem.

Sorry I’m not able to help because I can’t reproduce the problem. Excuse the silly question, but you’re not running under Classic are you? I also run 6.5 on an old G3 with OS 9.2.2 without trouble but I have had problems in general with having Classic running on my G5.
Just another shot in the dark - I’ve had trouble with Notes in the past if you allow it to do too many things on its own. Disable headline monitoring (db property) checking subscriptions, don’t check for mail more than every 15 minutes or so, and you may want to try turning off the “new mail” alarm. Wild guesses…Sure would be nice if there were more Mac users contributing here!

Subject: Suggestion from IBM Support
I reported the problem to IBM Support. They’re aware of it and are researching a fix for a future point release. In the meantime, they suggested that I disable Dynamic Client Configuration. Here’s how to do that:
Edit the Location document from the user’s workstation. E.g., click on “Office” at the right of the Notes Status bar (the one at the bottom), then choose Edit Current… from the pop-up.
Go to Actions, Advanced, Set Update Flag. You will see a dialog box that states “Allow administrators to keep this location’s settings up to date with those settings on your mail server.”
Clicking Yes will enable it; No will disable it, so click No. Save and close the Location document.
I’m testing this out now.

I’m back to the old 1-2 times/day workaround:
Force Quit Notes
Quit the NotesDynConfig process from the Activity Monitor
Relaunch Notes
