Notes ID in Domino directory

I registered some users and set the user IDs to be stored in both the Domino directory and in files. I still have the files, but suddenly the IDs are missing from the Domino directory. Is there anyway to add them back (or any idea how they would have gotten deleted)?

Troy,Depending on the version of the server, when you set up the user for the first time, and use their name to identify them to the server, it will take the id that is stored in the person document and remove it/download it to their data directory. You probably don’t want to keep the id file in the Domino directory anyway as this is a huge security risk.

Thanks for the response. Is there anyway to keep this from happening and/or put the ID files back in the Domino directory? This is not a production setup, but one that I use to test the integration of our software with Domino. It’s just more convenient to keep the ID files in the Domino directory instead of passing them around. I’m currently testing Domino 6.0.4, Domino 6.5.4, and Domino 7.0 Beta 3.

It should be an Advanced option when you create new people.

The problem isn’t getting the ID into the Domino directory when I register a user, the problem is keeping it there. As soon as a user logs into the Notes client, their ID is removed from the Domino directory. I’m looking for a way to prevent that from happening and/or putting the ID back into the Domino directory since I also have them saves as files.

Not during a normal R6 workstation setup. If you were to take an already-set-up workstation and change which ID it was using via either File > Security > Switch ID or the keyfilename INI file parameter, then the ID would stay in the person doc since you never ran the workstation setup process. But if it runs, it will check the NAB for an attached ID and remove it before giving you the option to browse for a file.

Since you have stated that “This is not a production setup, but one that I use to test,” I’ll skip the for-God’s-sake-don’t-store-ID-files-in-the-NAB rant, but please know that in a production environment, that rant is valid.

Why exactly do you want the ID files to stay in the NAB in this test environment? Wouldn’t a backup directory of ID files or a backup database of ID files (both easily set as automatic during new user registration) do?

iirc you take away normal users author rights and they won’t be able to update their own documents which includes the setup part taking out the id file.

if you want to double check then just see who was the last person to update the person document after the id file gets removed.

setting up recovery information in the certificate is a much better option though as you’ll get updates every time their id file changes and you drop the security issues involved with id files stored in the address book (that anyone can detach).
