I am supporting a lot of XP clients where we upgrade from 8.0 to 8.0.2, and are having issues on some machines where 8.0.2 will not start. Nothing seems to happen on some machines. On others the initial splash screen appears but after a while it goes away again. The task nlnotes.exe is running when you look at the taskmanager.
Adding the switch -sa to the startup icon gets the program up and running.
Tried to remove everything but the id-file without any luck.
First of all, using the full (java eclipse) 8.0.2 client (notes.exe) requires 1GB in internal memory (recommended 2GB). 512 sometimes works but very slow. But this was already the case with version 8.0.
For this reason I had to change the launch icon from notes.exe to nlnotes.exe (non eclipse, light version) for several users. Using this version almost fixes any performance issues but they wont have the new features like integrated sametime etc.
Another thing with Notes is that once it crashes, it will not kill all its processes making it unable to restart it until a reboot.
This can be worked around by opening the taskmanager and kill any process that starts with a ‘n’. (depending what else you run, some nérs might not have to be killed). You can also search for a program killnotes.exe which does this for you. But if im correct, no new killnotes.exe has been made for version 8, tho sometimes it works.
Also try to delete the cache.ndk file in the data directory (keep cache.ntf).
Should non of these options work then you should try to do a fresh and new install of Notes 8.0.2 on a computer instead of upgrading and see if the problem still occurs.
we have/had the same problem on some stations, they all had something in common - network directory redirection of “local settings/application data” which didn’t work.
I normally kill notes running nsd.exe (program files/lotus/notes/nsd.exe) -kill “start in” directory has to be your notes data directory.
There is a known hang in 8.0.2 when launching the client. As a workaround, add ENABLE_EARLY_AUTHENTICATION=0 to the notes.ini, this might resolve the issue for you.
I’ve been having similar issues. Most of the upgrades are going fine but of course some are just as you mentioned.
After performing an upgrade attempts at opening Notes 8 or 8.5 fail after the splash screen (upgrade from 7 to 8). Multiple reboots repairs re-launch fail. Uninstall / reinstall fail as well. The only thing I’ve found to work so far is to uninstall, remove the installer reg keys (GPO and Windows installer) and remove all but notes.ini and the data and workspace folders. The reinstall the application. Settings stay and notes launches fine.
I must admit all of this is somewhat unconventional for an install procedure. I have no choice but to tell people it should take up to half an hour for the upgrade but may take an hour and a half if it fails and if my fix does not work it may take half a day!
I’m bookmarking to take advantage of the answers you’ll get.
Edited to add: I have an application called “killnotes.exe” that I use when Notes isn’t cooperating with me and after a few tries it works. My computer has 2GB RAM.
