Subject: Notes Client Dead?

For months IBM has been floating trail balloons about the end of Notes and Domino (mostly Domino until now). I think (and I have no conformation of this) that IBM has made the internal decision to kill Notes and Domino. What company put out statements like these when they are completely committed to something? I think they are just waiting till one of these trial balloons does not get shot down in the press and then the official announcement will come. Now would be the perfect time, they just finished a lengthy development cycle and I doubt that they have ramped up a big team for the next release.

I have a business that depends on Notes and Domino. In todays uncertain economy it is difficult at best, added uncertainly from the platform provider nearly kills all opportunity to close business. I guarantee tomorrow clients will be delaying purchases because of this announcement. An end must come to every great product but a slow death is a horrible way for anything to die. IBM do what you must but please do it swiftly and decisively!

Subject: Are you saying GWI is dead? I am sure you are not.

Daren,

There is plenty of IBM/Lotus platform and technology out there to help you make $$$$. Haven’t you exploited this with both your .Net and other Notes product offerings? I beleive there are lots of IBM/Lotus technologies to make money on. Plus you already have a large installed based and happy customers to sell into. Make it happen and be quick before I do.

Subject: GWI IS NOT DEAD! WE ARE ALIVE AND WELL!

As evidenced by our recent 9th release of c.Support for Notes and Domino. Our R&D remains at pre 1999 levels and we continue to sign up new customers at a solid pace.

If you would ever buy that system we are trying to sell you it would help

Subject: Strategy?

Could this be yet another instance of IBM’s inability to convey a coherent strategy with regard to Notes and Domino?

If I were privy to the cocktail napkin on which IBM’s product development/marketing strategy was conceived, would it resemble the following:

  1. Spend no less than four years on forthcoming release.

  2. Pull anticipated features prior to release.

  3. Instil uncertainty in user community.

  4. Release scaled down product.

  5. Instil uncertainty in user community - just to be sure.

  6. Clarify commitment to platform.

  7. Kill product.

  8. Re-clarify commitment to platform.

  9. “Componentize” product.

Honestly, I don’t care, but it’s really difficult to watch. All I can glean from this is a reaffirmation that IBM is a hardware company and nothing more.

Well, if they are truly able to do this:

“We have to make the new environment so inviting, the total cost of ownership so compelling, and the tools so good that existing Lotus customers will want to move on their own volition,” Bowden said. "

I don’t think it will matter very much, eh?

At least they’re carrying the Java banner. Although, I’ve never meet anyone outside the IBM business partner community that’s a Websphere enthusiast.

Subject: Remember what Larry Bowden’s job is

He is there to push and build portals, not the Notes client. He doesn’t care about the Notes client, he would become more important within IBM if the Notes client died and Portals became the standard. This is like NC vs PC, iNotes vs Notes, people have a need for different things, some will get by fine with a portal, others need more power and flexibility.

As for the guy from Redmonk O’Grady, what a dumb quote, collaboration software hasn’t given any value? He must purely dealing with Microsoft Groupware accounts!
