I have recently had several clients that just fail to start up - they do not get beyond the splash screen. From searching this forum we can use a short term fix by giving them the basic client. We have also found that renaming the Workspace folder works. If the old Workspace is then put back it fails again - does anyone have any idea why? What is causing this and is there a permanent solution? It is happening on 8.5.1 clients on Win XP and Win 7 and the 851 fix pack makes no difference. But is not happening to most people. (yet!) Today it has happened to me - I cannot use the basic client as I need the design and admin clients too and renaming the workspace folder has not worked for me. Please can anyone help? I have just logged this with IBM too so will post in here if I find anything useful
Subject: Files to delete
I’ve found that deleting these files from the Lotus Notes data directory can be helpful: cache.ndk, desktop8.ndk, bookmark.nsf (I only had to delete the last file once).
I’ve also found that when Notes is removed it leaves a mess of registry entries. I use ccleaner (Speed up, optimize and clean your PC for free | CCleaner for PC) to clean up the registry.
Subject: Notes 8.5 client failing on startup
For the eclipse client you will have to delete x:\notes\data\workspace folder. Your clients will lose all their customizations including Sidebar applications/widgets that they may have installed. For cleaning up the Basic client you can continue deleting/renaming desktop6.ndk or bookmark.nsf depending on whether they use the Notes Workspace or Bookmarks.

Subject: Workspace is issue…trying to isolate exactly what
Thanks to both for your replies. It is definitely the Workspace folder that is causing the problems. I am guessing that something is corrupted after a crash - and we are getting a lot more crashes since moving to 8.5. If I rename this folder Notes creates a new one on startup - and starts up fine. If I then go back to the old one it fails to start up. The link to directory structure was really useful thanks. Am now going to try to isolate exactly what it is in this folder that is preventing Notes starting as it is pain deleting the whole thing and losing all customisations
