Notes 8.5 Client fails to start up after crash - is uninstall & re-inslallthe only solution?

After OS crash (sometimes just after restarting the client) Notes launches the splash screen but then terminates, without starting the Notes client. Restrting the computer and deleteing cache.ndk, renaming bookmark & desktop file and also deleting the desktop folder and all notes related files in Windows temp folder does not solve the issue.

Running Notes client setup does not help either. I have to uninstall the Notes client and run new installation to make it work.

It seems like there is a setting somewhere outside the Notes environment stopping the client to start up - and I can’t figure out where? HELP!!

Any suggestions?

How can I troubleshoot and find out why/where Notes client startup fails?

…will see if they can offer any suggestions.

Subject: Notes 8.5. Client Fails to Startup after crash

Did you pass this on to development? It appears they have no solution?

We still have the same problem. It has been ongoing every since Notes 8.5

This is also getting very frustrating.

Subject: Basic Mode (-SA) did not fix the issue, but client can start up

Going back to the standard (Java) client was not possible.

Anyway, at least the user is up & running for now.

Further suggestions will be appreciated.

Subject: Try installing the Notes 8.5 fix pack

I had the exact same problem. Switching to basic mode allowed me to start the client, but after switching back to standard mode the client still did not come up (seemed to crash at the end of the splash screen).

I installed the fix pack for 8.5 and it resolved my problem: http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/r5fixlist.nsf/83cabfd1d035a58c85257057005181cd/43c58a61277b4cd6852576020069d93d?OpenDocument

Subject: Other things to try

I’ve also seen this work: Restart Windows.

Then restart Notes.

You can also try this:

Delete data\workspace.

Restart Notes.

Ways to start Notes in Basic mode:

notes.exe -sa

notes.exe -basic

nlnotes.exe

Subject: Still happens in 8.5.3

I just had this very same thing happen to a laptop running 8.5.3. Win 7 blue screened and then Notes would not start as standard client even after uninstall - reboot - reinstall.Tried launching basic client and that worked OK so figured it was an Eclipse based problem. Found this thread and deleted data\workspace directory - working OK now.

Subject: Delete data\workspace.metadata

Hi,I have the same problems, and I red this thread and so I deleted only .metadata from workspace. That helps for me. I made a copy from my .metadata from my good state of client and when the client crashes I just delete the wrong one and copy the backup into their place.

I made a copy because in the .metadata are some pointer to my installed and much liked Teamstudio tools and I have lost they.

Subject: that’ll teach you not to use Vista :frowning:

however, one more thing to try - find notes.ini, and delete all but the first two lines (everything except KitType and Directory).

Subject: OS not my decision. Anyway, I did try to run the setup - no luck

even though I jeept the first 4 lines …

Subject: Switch to Basic Mode

We’ve had that problem, and have found switching to basic mode then back to standard fixes the problem without reinstalling Notes. (Not sure why.)

Add UseBasicNotes=1 to the ini file, save, and open Notes. After Notes starts close it, and remove UseBasicNotes=1 or change the 1 to a 0.

I hope this work for you.

Subject: I will try next time I got this issue. This time I did re-install ;o((

Subject: Switch to Basic Mode

Kim,

Thanks for the tip, but it would help to identify which .ini file you are referring to. I searched about 30 files and did not see the setting you’re referring to.

Thanks
