Notes 7.0.2 using all computer resources

Our whole organization is experienceinf the same issue with the new Notes client. Whether sitting idle or using Notes, it takes over the whole pc’s resources and wont let go. The only way ot stop it is to stop Notes and restart it. I have never experienced this with other versions. It happens to all of our seats. Very annoying. Does anyone have any idea whats doing this. There are no fulltext indexes or any process donr locally. Very mysterious.

I have been running 7.0.1 for quite some time on my Compaq laptop. With no issues. You need to specify what kind of machines your organization is running it on. And what O/S is being used. My machine has: a 2.7ghz P4 (non HT), 1.1 gig of RAM (Compaq’s RAM configs are a bit strange, but the gist is: It came with 256mb which 128mb is alloted to the GPU. I pulled a 128mb stick and added a 1gig stick. Thus: 1.12 gig for system usage). Also, if the machines are running less than 512mb or system RAM you may want to look into upping the paging file space on the HDD.

They are all built machines. My work machine has 1 gig ram. These machines are frequently sitting idle and this happens. There is no specific time. There are no local agents, schedules, indexes, etc. They are pc’s with 2.8 ghz processors. It also happens at my house with a Dell 3.0 ghz and 2 gig ram, terabyte of disc. Is there any place ti view processes in Notes that might be running. It didnt happen to us until 7.0.2. I’ve been doing Notes since 2.0 and never experienced this. Doesnt matter if Notes is on Network or using local copies of the databases.

Hope this helps…

What O/S? XP? You can use the performance monitor that is built into windows to see how much of the processor/memory Notes is using. The main process is: “NLnotes”. I will assume you are not running the admin client or the designer client as Ncollect is a resource hog. And even with 1 gig or even 2 gig of RAM, the O/S may still page out memory to the disk…

Yikes! 2 Gig really? Hope they get that fixed before we move to 7.

Xp as shown above… It happens to people that do not have Admin and/or Designer as well. So I don’t suspect those as having an effect. It is some process that starts whether Notes is being used or just sitting there. I cant find anywhere that allows me to see any process being run in Notes in background.

There a couple of apps that are better at viewing processes than the perf monitor. Try this for free: Process Viewer. I also use Essential Network Tools. You can get an evaluation copy of this one. It is very good at showing exactly what processes are hogging resources. Also a good network monitoring tool. The fact that users are not admins or are admins on the machines shouldn’t make a difference as far as performance is concerned. I would check the paging file as a precaution. XP will page out a bit. Even with a gig or more of RAM.

Terry, one last thing. I recently started a new Lotus Notes admin contract. The IT dept gave me a Thinkpad T61 to use. I loaded Notes version 7.02 on it. And found the performance of the machine to be awful. I observed (using Essential Net Tools’ process monitor graph) that Ntaskldr was hogging system resources to the point of making the thinkpad run like an old 386 machine. I also noticed a lot of disk thrashing going on. Both of these events led me to check the paging file settings on the Thinkpad. Turns out the laptop has 512mb of system RAM and subsequently, the MS reccomended paging file of 1 1/2 the size of system RAM. Well, when it comes to running Lotus Notes, Microsoft doesn’t know what it’s talking about where it concerns the paging file. So, even though you may think that a gig of RAM should be enough to run Notes and everything else on your machines, it isn’t. I reccomend bumping up the paging file to: 1028 minimum and 2048 maximum. As soon as I made this adjustment, the Thinkpad’s performance came back to what it should be. That is about all I have on this subject…so good luck and I hope I’ve helped.

Thanks will investigate this and give it a try. I appreciate your information.

Just checked my pagefile and its already at 1440 min and 2880 max. I will check the program you suggested. Thanks again.

Terry, sorry to have to inform you that what I did with the paging file did not actually correct the problem. This is a strange issue. On my Dell desktop Notes (all clients as I am an admin) runs just fine, but on the laptop (with a gig of RAM and sufficient paging file) it runs like doo doo. If it isn’t Ncollect hogging system resoources then its Ntaskldr. But, I also see svchost and other MS processes hogging the system and I see a lot of disk thrashing going on. We are using McAfee Virus protection here (uggghhh) and that may have something to do with it. I am still investigating why this is happening. If I find anything further I’ll post it here. Otherwise, my advice would be to contact IBM and ask them what is going on.
