Problem/Query:

I imported a bookmarks.nsf file from Notes 9 into a new Notes 12 installation and received the error message “File name too long or file name syntax is not allowed” when attempting to start Notes. What could be the cause of this error? Is it possible that a bookmark name in Notes 9 can be incompatible with Notes 12?
To sucessfully start the Notes client I must use the newly created bookmarks.nsf from Notes 12.

Hi Andrew,

If the newly generated bookmarks.nsf from Notes 12 allows the client to start without error, it’s likely that the original file from Notes 9 contains corrupted or malformed entries that are incompatible with the newer client.

You can try the following steps before resorting to a new bookmark.nsf:

  • Run maintenance on the old bookmarks.nsf using nfixup, ncompact, and nupdall to check for corruption.
  • Replace the design using the bookmark.ntf template from Notes 12 (File > Application > Replace Design).

If these steps don’t resolve the issue, a new bookmarks.nsf is recommended to ensure stability and compatibility with Notes 12.
