New users can't open mailbox

Hello,

I’m trying to set up my first Domino/Notes Server in order to check whether it’s an alternative for a customer of ours. I tried groupwise but gave up. It’s awful to manage. Now I’m giving domino/notes a chance.

Unfortunately I couldn’t manage to get anywhere with any account except the one from the administrator.

Logging in is not a problem, but when I try to access any function within the notes client, I get the message “You are not authorized to access that database” and on the domino console I see “ATTEMPT TO ACCESS DATABASE mail/domino.nsf by /hilotec was denied”.

“mail” is the name of the domino system, “domino” is the username of the administrator. “” is the full name of the user trying to access its mailbox/calendar/… and “hilotec” is the mail domain.

Now my question is: why is this user trying to access the administrator’s mailbox?

And the most weired thing is that I gave manager rights to everyone on the mail/domino.nsf file but the users still can’t log in.

It would be wonderful if someone could give me a hint.

Thanks.

Jean-Pierre

I’m a bit confused by your description…

what do you mean with “any function within the notes client”?

how do the users log in? Do they have their own clients, or is everything happening on the same client PC?

Did you register them?

How did you configure the clients?

Uwe

Hi Uwe, With any function I mean the Mail, Calendar, Contacts and To-do list present on the welcome page of the notes client.

When I start the notes client, the user is asked to log in. I select the Id-file and enter its password. So far, everything works fine. I see “Opened session for /hilotec (Release 6.5.1)” on the domino console.

If I then try to select any of the icons on the welcome notes’ welcome page (bookmark.nsf) I get the error “You are not authorized to access that database” and the “ATTEMPT TO ACCESS DATABASE mail/domino.nsf by /hilotec was denied” message on the domino console.

I’m testing them all on a windows 2000 professional installation inside a vmware host. It’s the same machine I’m using the Domino Admin on. I did register the users. I saved their ID file, then opened the notes client, selected the id file, entered the password and faced the problem.

So far I did not make any configuration in the notes client. It was installed together with the Domino Admin and Designer. I just fired it up, loaded the id file and keep on watching the error message.

Regards,

Jean-Pierre

is ‘domino.nsf’ the actual database file name reported on the console? If so, did you check the location document you are using, to make sure the correct mail file is specified? If you are trying to use the Welcome page, the contents of it are driven from the location doc. So, clicking on ‘new mail’ on the Welcome page opens the mail file specified in the location document, and creates a new memo.

If the mail file specified in the location document is one the ID file you are using does not have access to, you will get this error.

Hi Jean-Pierre,

First of all I would like to advice that if you are going to test a new system, first of all, you should read a lot. It’s a painfull work, but very important to do.

Now, I will try to explain in a few lines how the system work.

When you installa client workstation, you will see a few relevant items:

1- User.id (This is the user ID file. It’s user for AUTHENTICATION ONLY. This is not a profile!!!)

2- Location Office (This is the default name…) The location document is like a profile. It contains the user’s home server, user’s mail file, user’s mail domain, and so on.

If you cross this 2 items, like user ID for John and location for Anne, you will get this strange messages.

So you can try to build a new location for each user, and when you switch to a different ID you will also switch locations, so John’s ID will be used with John’s location, while Anne’s ID will be used with Anne’s location, and Mr. Administrator will use his own ID with his own location.

I work like that, with my laptop. When I come to custommer A I use location A, Custommer B, Location B, and so on.

Just pay attention to leave ACL to local address book (names.nsf) open to all users, AND location documents ALSO open to all users.

As a last tip, you can also fill an advanced field in the location doc, and when you switch location, ID will be automatically switched too.

Hope this helps a bit,

Daniel

Hi PK Ray, Hi Daniel,

Thanks very much for your advice. I was not aware of the fact that the location is indeed the profile. I changed the configuration of the location and now everything works fine.

Hi,

Great to know.

But really, when you go to test a new system, try reading some instructions before you do something.

It’s healty
