I’d prefer there just to be a single Notes forum, the release would have to be marked clearly in the main view, but at least there’d only be one place to search/browse

Agreed… it’s a pain having to search all forums separately. Many elements and techniques of Notes have hardly changed throughout the releases, and many solutions found in the 4/5, 6/7 and 8 forums are equally relevant in 8.5.
Has anyone tried creating a Google custom search to do the equivalent of searching all forums in one hit?
