I think when someone creates a new post and states that they are having a problem with some code they wrote but they don’t post their code, a big hammer should pop out of their computer monitor and bop them on the head.
Subject: Many have tried to implement this
Problem is, during early QA they get whacked by the hammer so often that they never manage to finish the debugging.
Subject: That is what sales people are for
Let them do the testing. They don’t even feel it through the thick skins they develop.
Subject: new feature - really cool
Paul,
I think you are overlooking some important success rate issues. There may be issues with people of different heights. I feel that a boxing glove coming out the monitor in a straight line at great speed is more likely to always hit something

You also need your feature to be able to tell if it’s a specific functionality issue (and not a general post like this) so it will likewise bop them on the head when they indicate their problem occurs in All Releases on All Platforms.

I like your ideas, keep the enhancement requests coming …
Subject: How about an electric shock to their keyboard on querysave?
Subject: RE: new feature - really cool
As with so many excellent ideas (such as brain surgery to correct a tendency to believe what one wishes to believe in spite of all evidence to the contrary), it unfortunately depends on the co-operation of the potential beneficiary. I can’t imagine that many people will be willing to purchase and install the boxing glove/hammer peripheral, even though they may, unknowingly, need it desperately.
Subject: RE: new feature - really cool
Andre, I can’t imagine many people to be willing to purchase and install an operating system that wants to be re-“activated” every 6 months (or will doom your investment), but still they do.
Which leads to a sad conclusion: IBM cannot help us here, the new device will have to be sold by the same guy that brought us stuff as desperately needed as “natural” keyboards …
Subject: NOT a new feature
Paul, Paul, Paul… This is not a new request. It’s been around since the early BBS days and is relevant to any and all on-line discussion groups. If such a technology was possible, it would be implemented.
May I suggest an alternative approach to the issue?
Assume the following are true:
We can’t control the external behavior of the system (ie people will post crap).
We can control our response to the system.
Here are a range of acceptable responses to negative external events:
Deep breathing.
Think happy thoughts.
Crumple up a piece of paper, imbue the paper with your malevolent feelings toward the poster, throw the paper away, feel your anger and frustration dissipate.
Three fingers of Jack Daniels taken internally. Repeat process until calm returns (or you pass out).
Now, isn’t that better? Oh yeah…
Subject: RE: NOT a new feature
I could really use not only the big hammer, the boxing glove, and the JD. I am in yet another Notes Admin or Dev job where they have decided that it would be a GREAT idea to outsource.
I am afraid that I am running out of happy thoughts, my friends. It isn’t even tempting to turn to the darkside (MSoft) anymore.
But, what happy thoughts I have are sent your way.
Subject: RE: NOT a new feature
honestly I just needed a good laugh today and I knew this would get the ball rolling. thx to everyone who responded for contributing to my need for some dry humor.
Subject: new feature - really cool
Excellent idea but take it a step further and combine the big hammer with the shock treatment and have it inflict its punishment in increasing severity if:
-
At least 30 minutes of quality face time is not spent with the debugger or some sort of debugging effort is not done before posting.
-
If a search is not done.
-
And any questions about date / time programming would automatically force the poster to do a bunch of searches as I think that every date / time problem has been answered.
Now, where is my bottle of JD??

LOL!
If that’s the case, I don’t think that this post will be complete until at least Stan Rogers chimes in. ![]()
