I am going to migrate my Domino Server 6.5.4 to a new server windows 2003. I have about 110 users, can anyone advise how much RAM should I have for this new server?
The old server has 2 GB of RAM but it seems to be very slow whenever users access the mails during the day.
You really need to do a proper analysis before buying anything new -
Find the bottlenecks in your system - 2GB is probably plenty of ram for 110 users, but if your disk subsystem is a single mirror of drives, or worse (say, a 3 drive RAID 5 array) then you may get more benefit from adding a fast, expandable storage system than getting a whole new server.
Do some searching and you’ll find plenty of links for Domino performance evaluation and tuning (I think we have Alan Lepofsky to thank for a number of those posts)
I agree with Peter, the bottleneck may be the storage. A server for 110 users is a small one, and I/O will be the responsable for the performance problem.
As an example, when we had ~275 users, a 4-drive raid5 was OK for our data. Now we have 400-500 users, and the new 14-drive Raid 1+0 (that’s seven mirrors, striped) seems to be doing the job.
2GB should be plenty for a server with only 110 users on it.
You haven’t said what OS you are currently on, NT will struggle with 6.5.4 but W2K would be ok with 2GB and 2 processors.
Of course the more memory (Domino will use as much as it needs if it is available) and cpu power the better, 2 processor’s at least are good to have aswell.
