Network installation with 8.0.1 (or 8.0.2 to be released) possible?

We have 2 types of Notes installations for the clients: (1) network installation for those with a desktop computer and (2) local installation for those with laptops. Right now we have Notes 7.0.2 and before upgrading we wondered if we could have a network installation with 8.0.1.

By network installation we mean that each user has an icon pointing to the network drive where the actual software is installed.

The shared network install feature is not currently in plan for 8.x.

Subject: Curious: why do you want to use a network install?

Mariel: I’m curious as to why you’re using (and want to continue with) the network installation of the client. I remember this being popular when client disk space was an issue back in Notes R3 days.

Subject: I don’t wanna do it but the bosses do

Well, I guess the reason why the bosses want to continue with this is because our users are used to this and it would be less “traumatic” to go from v7.0.2 to v8.0.1 (or .2, we still don’t know which client we’re upgrading to) in terms of how to do things. also because we have implemented Roaming Profiles (Windows) and the Notes folder is in their My Documents, so that they can log in with their settings no matter which computer they log in. Of course, I know that Notes has its own Roaming user feature but it seems to be new for 8. I’m fairly new at administering Notes, you see.

Personally, I rather have the clients installed on each user’s computer.

Subject: Note on roaming

Mariel,

Please note that roaming will not work in 8.0.x standard (Eclipse) clients. This will work for the 8.5.x standard client, due out later this year. Since you’re new to Notes, you might want to check out Smart Upgrade, which will ease your installation chores.
