Names Lookup in Emails

One of our users has a large number of contacts in his local names.nsf

Up until a few days ago, if he entered some initials, say RTY (which is someones ShortName/UserID and then press return, it gives a list of people from the local address book, but not from the Domino Directory, which is where the user RTY is stored. It works on some, but not all.

His location settings are set to exhaustively check all address books, so I’m a bit stumped as to why it’s sometimes not going to the Domino Directory and just taking from the local nab

What could be causing this?

So what changed? Of course the User will say “I didn’t do anything!” but I would suggest that they did and it might not have been just in Notes! Was there a change to the local machine in any way in and around the time of the malfunction? Was there a change on the server? Upgrade to hardware or software? Did the User create, delete, modify any contatc documents in the personal Names.nsf in and around the time? Does it work for some but not other names, or has it stopped working for all?

One of my biggest support issues is the call that says the agent stopped working yesterday at 3 o’clock, will you look at the code and find out why?

First the agent has been running fine for months so my first question is “What happened yesterday at 3 o’clock?” the answer is almost always “Nothing” but generally upon further investigation we find well actually there was something that happened and when that gets fixed – look at that it starts working again.

So “What Changed?” is the question and the answer might not be very obvious. I remember spending several hours trying to figure out why a piece of code quit working , only to find that te Admin that had signed the agent was fired yesterday and their ID was placed in the Terminate group.

Dear Bill,Agreed that some changes on the user end might be causing the problem.

In my case, my machine has been formatted and Lotus Notes reinstalled. And now I have started facing the issue. I have checked the location document and all seems right.

Could you please give the probable settings that need to checked to set things going?

Thanks

Bill, I’d normally ask the same question. The answer was the the Notes client was reinstalled because the user was getting a “lookup error”. I use quotes because I didn’t deal with the error or reinstall and that’s all the person who did do it could tell me. Now when he enters initials in the to field of an email he may get a list of 3 or 4 names to choose from, but they are from the local nab and not the domino directory.

However trying different users initials does sometimes work, or at least bring up a list of both local and directory names…

So that raises a whole bunch more questions (n answers). So when they reinstalled the Notes Client did they do it as a clean install (ie deleted the Lotus/Notes folder) or did they just install overtop of what was there? Are they using the same Notes.ini as they were before the install?

Can you setup a test on another machine (user) to do the same thing?

Look at the User Preferences and see if you see anthing unusual. These sorts of problems are generally hard to find, the problem that is easy to fix is almost always the hardest to find.

My best guess is that in reinstalling the client, the INI was wiped clean.

Check to see if the type-ahead works when connected to the network - and fails when it is not. If this is the case, be sure that the local replica of the corporate Directory is listed in the “Local address books” field under User Preferences==>Mail==>General (or the “NAMES=names.nsf” line in the INI)
