Name order in NAB, common vs. abbreviated

We use the ($VIMPeople) view for many of our 360 Notes applications to lookup Notes names in abbreviated format (John Smith/SALES/INC). We have always listed the abbreviated name first in the Fullname field of the NAB and the common name (John Smith) as the second item in the Fullname field. We recently hired a MS Exchange consultant because some of your new acquisitions are going to stay with Exchange and use the MS Domino Connector. The consultant insists that we must change the order for the Exchange users so that the common name is first and the abbreviated name is second. This has blown up a number of my apps. I can code around it with a new view in the NAB, but my concern runs much deeper. ($VIMPeople) is a hidden utility view used internally by Notes. The Exchange users will still be accessing Notes apps via the 7.0.3 client. So, some users will appear in the NAB one way and others the reverse.

My question is will this screw up anything beyond my own apps? Is it a requirement that abbreviated name come first? Will any Notes functions begin to fail because of this?

Has anyone had to reverse the order because of the MS Domino Connector? Did it cause any problems?

Thanks from a developer resisting the Borg.

Subject: Name order in NAB, common vs. abbreviated

But of course an MS-Exchange consultant would tell you to do that!

Sounds like your trying to change Domino to work with Exchange but it should be the other way around.

The standard default order for the Fullname field in person documents is Abbreviated (Canonical), then common. It’s always been done this way and I’m sure for many good reasons. Whenever you’re logged into Notes it seems the first name in the Fullname field is your authenticated name and this would affect ACL’s, address resolutions and lots of other areas I can’t think of right now. I’d probably keep all your Notes / Domino settings in the standard format and look for other ways to make Exchange work.
