Multi-User and Full Admin Install on one PC?

Problem: I want a full install (client, designer, administrator) AND a multi-user client install on the same laptop.

History: We have a laptop shared among several users. I’m the only admin who uses it. They are execs in our tiny company who take it on the road now and then. We will not be investing in another laptop just for a couple of weeks a year of portable usage.

I’ve kludged my way through this since 6.0, but it is a total pain with each upgrade.

I can do a full install and put it in, lets say, the “C:\lotus\notes” directory. Then, I can take the client-only disk and do a multi-install in the “c:\program files\lotus\notes” directory.

This actually works. We have separate OS logins (Win XP), and the multi-user installations function for them and the full-install works just for me.

BUT, when I go to upgrade, I put in the 6.0.2 full install CD and it finds the last install (the client-only to c:\program files…). I change the path to “c:\lotus\notes” with the intention of upgrading my full-client/admin installation, and then continue with the install, and it completes.

HOWEVER, it does not actually install to the “c:\lotus\notes” directory. Instead, it ignores the paths I manually put in during the installation process and overwrites the client-only install in the “c:\program files\lotus\notes” directory, thus turning my multi-user client-only install into mud.

SO, I’ve then have to uninstall the entire mess (there is, of course, only one Lotus Notes item listed in Add/Remove programs) and reinstall them in sequence again to get both of these installations to function the way I want.

Is there a better way to make this work? Does anybody else out there share a PC with both the client/designer/admin installation and a multi-user client-only installation on it?

Or, is there some better way to acomplish this that will give me the client/designer/admin capabilities and my compadres a multi-user client-only installation?

When upgrading a notes client with notes 6 the path to the files listed in the registry under hkey local machine software lotus is the path that the installation will go for. If you want the install program to behave differently, first delete this registry entry. Another good precaution is to rename the notes.ini file for the install you want untouched during the upgrade.
