Subject: The correct way to setup a true multi-user client

The following method can be used to have completely distinct users share the same notes client, but each having their own workspace, bookmarks, address books and preferences.

Let’s say we have 2 users (just do the same for more). One called Joe, and one called Mark.

  1. Install lotus notes on the PC but don’t open it yet

  2. Move the notes.ini file in the data folder

  3. Create a copy of the data folder (in the same folder as the current data folder), and name it Data_Joe

  4. Rename the original data folder Data_Mark

  5. Edit the notes.ini in each folder and change the “Directory=” variable to point to the proper folder (i.e. Directory=C:\lotus\notes\data_joe)

  6. Copy each user’s ID file in his data folder or leave external as you wish.

  7. Create a manual shortcut to nlnotes.exe for each user and put it on the desktop.

  8. Edit each shortcut and change the following:

For Joe, the shortcut should look like this:

     Target: "c:\lotus\notes\nlnotes.exe" =c:\lotus\notes\data_joe\notes.ini

     Start In: c:\lotus\notes\data_joe

    And for Mark:

     Target: "c:\lotus\notes\nlnotes.exe" =c:\lotus\notes\data_mark\notes.ini

     Start In: c:\lotus\notes\data_mark

  9. Now start each one and go through the configuration wizard. By using nlnotes.exe with this setup, you can even launch both at the same time.

I use this setup to support 4 different companies without having to keep switching my location document. I have all 4 running at the same time and there’s no glitches.

Do they log onto the system with their own credentials? You can set up a roaming client and convert them to roaming users if that is the case, but if they are sharing a single logon, it won’t work so well.

Another way I’ve seen done for a mutli-user with unique windows logins is a mapped drive associated and a single “normal” Notes install that points to a data drive that is a mapped share (i.e. each user has an “L” drive mapped and that “L” drive has their own notes data information so when they launch Notes, the notes.ini points to the L drive for the user data and it’s unique to them… )

If they share a common logon to the machine, the only way I can think of is location documents and switching IDs when they switch to their location. They share the bookmarks/workspace and local address book so it’s not perfect.
