MS Clustering VS Domino Clustering - Need Opinions

Hi Guys

I’m trying to decide which is better, MS Clustering or Domino

There seems to be issues with the NSD command not running properly when a failure occures in an MS cluster. Therefore, they claim is not offically supported.

Would it be possible to get a few pros and cons of each? Real world experiance is better then technotes anyday.

Thank you

Hello

My guess is that you will probably not get many positive responses for MS Clustering. In my experience using Domino clustering has many advantages to MS clustering. To name a few

  • In a Domino server the cluster members are all running and operational, so if one fails it is the client that switch over to another server, no complex activity at the server side.

  • With the Domino solution you can balance your load over the servers so you don’t have to have Iron doing nothing other than waiting for the other to crash.

  • When upgrading you can run different versions in the same cluster. So if a software problem occurs in the new version your users will switch to the still running old version (or vica versa).

  • The setup of a MS Cluster is much more complex (HW and SW) than a Domino cluster wich is basically just 2 or more installs of a Domino server.

  • The only admin issue with a Domino cluster is that you have to create replica’s of your databases on both servers, so that requires extra attention. (although in Notes this can be solved by using a tool, I developed a tool for this myself)

In short go for Domino clusters, it is easier and works better, that is my experience after having seen and managed both solutions.

Works across platforms. You can cluster a Windows server with a Linux server for example.

Works across releases. You can cluster a D7 server with D6 server.

Works across geographic boundaries. You can cluster a server in Paris with one in Melbourne.

Had MS cluster – don’t bother - had lots of problems.

Domino clustering for domino applications servers has been working very well.
