HiYou will have to work with your SAN Administrator to get this working. This is what you would need to do.

Retain your existing program and data directories on your server

Once you have your SAN ready plan how much space/trays you are going to allocate to your Notes server/s.

Create the necessary drive [may not be the correct technical term] on the SAN for the first Notes server.

Copy the data from the Notes server to the SAN drive. There are some SAN tools to do this.

Ensure you keep this in synch.

Decide on the date you want to do the switch.

Keep your Notes program files locally on the server.

Map your Notes Data directory to the SAN drive that you assigned.

In future when you swap machines to upgrade hardware of the Notes server all you need to do is install the Notes program you do not have to worry about the data.

Also as your Notes Data grows you can add trays to your SAN and expand the space.

Note: You need to plan carefully when determining the SAN architecture from the Notes point.

Thanks Robert for your input… here is what’s happening, we are gettiing iSCSI SAN (not a fiber) the way it works is you map the drive to SAN device from you Notes server, and from Notes server point of view new mapped drive looks like local drive on the server you look at all partitions and they seams to be local eventhough (let say F: drive) is going to SAN, so I’m thinking that install files must be on local drive (let say D:) and data on SAN (F:) problem am seeing here is that today everything is local on D: how do I repoint it after moving data folder to F ?

We have done this recently.

Open the notes.ini on your server, look for any entry that says d:\lotus\notes\data… and change the d:\ to f:\

Look thru the entire notes.ini for your server. Once finished restart the Domino server.

All done.

Good luck.

Mac,

did you keep exacutables on local drive or they also were moved to SAN? so following your direction I need to move entire \lotus\notes\data directory structure to SAN and change path in notes.ini, now since I want to keep program files locally I will need to keep NOTESPROGRAM=d:\lotus\notes path as is.

I’m I correct?

RafalYes. I kept the executables in D:\Lotus\Domino and moved the entire Data directory to the SAN, Then updated the notes.ini file.

Worked perfectly.

Mac,

Did you experience any performance problems after moving the Domino data to the SAN? We are going to implementing a HP SAN and would also like to move our Domino data to the SAN. Server-SAN connection will be 2GB Fibre Channel.

Thanks,
