mNotes and Domino performance problem

I am working at a client site, where they are evaluating mNotes for PDA synch. One of the users is almost killing the server when plugging in his device. When the device is connected it seems to be polling the server constantly, and the server CPU utilisation is constantly at 100%. It is the server process nServer which is taking all the resources which it can get, and the server jumps from ablur 1000 transactions/min. to 8000 to 12000 transcations/min. In the Domino Server log I can also see that this particular user performs several million transactions a day. Normally users maximally perform a couple of thousand transactions a day.

WS:

Windows XP SP1

Notes 6.5.2

mNotes 4.0.0

SVR:

Windows 2000 Server SP4

Domino 6.5.2

Has anyone seen a similar issue?

Put a call into Commontime support and work through this with them.

I have several customers working with mNotes and have had no issues like this at all …

Subject: mNotes and Domino performance problem - RESOLVED

Thanks Rob for your suggestion.

In the meantime I have been able to resolve the issue myself, and it is quite interesting.

The reason for the server load was that the mNotes configuration on this client was set to check for updates every 5 sec. This resulted in millions of transactions on a daily basis, and high CPU utilization on the server.

Of course the user said that he had nothing to do with the crazy interval….

I found out that he was right.

The 5 sec. only appears after a mNotes upgrade, and here is why:

I tried to install the mNotes 3.0.4 software and create a Cadenza.nsf database on the basis of this template. Now it has a Server Configuration document stating to check for updates every 5 min.

Then I upgraded the Cadenza.nsf database with the v4.0.1 template. And hereby the form for the Server Configuration is upgraded, and the value 5 is kept but now the form states the value in sec.

I changed the value to 300 sec. and all is fine.

This is probably mentioned somewhere in the documentation, but I could not find any at the Commontime website.

If anybody know of a good knowledge base for mNotes issues I would appreciate a post, since the Q&A section at the Commontime website is … well – not very good.
