Migrating users to a new server

Hi there,

I am currently working to migrate approx 300 people to a centralised system running Domino 6.5.4. These people will be using both Mail and Domino Applications on the same server. I wondered if anyone could please point me in the direction of any best practice documentation that covers server specs for this amount of people and also whether or not it would be advisable to have mail and applications on separate servers? Any other advice greatly appreciated too!

Thanks,

Alex

Alex,

It is usually best to have seperate servers for mail and applications, but it is not required. A lot of it depends on the size of your server (hard drives, memory, CPU, etc), and how much space you are allowing each mail user to have for their respective email databases. Domino handles mail databases differently than most Exchange/Outlook type mail programs in that there are individual databases for each user in Domino. I assume from your post that you are migrating from another email package. If you can provide a few more details here, you will probably get more help.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for the message. Apologies, I guess I could have been a touch more specific with my question!

The systems are currently running on Domino 6.5.4 in 4 different offices and they are centralising in to one. I will be putting all users on the single point server and having a second server for backup. I was thinking of having the 300 users on one server and the applications on the other, but have each server contain a backup of the other’s databases which can then run failover on a cluster.

Both servers will be about a 3ghz processor, 4gb RAM and will be using a SAN for storage. Does this sound like it’d be OK or are there other implications that I should consider?

Thanks!

Alex
