META Group, an independent worldwide consulting firm is conducting a messaging TCOstudy. We are trying to recruit Oracle Collaboration Suite, Lotus

Notes Domino R5/R6 and Exchange 2003 clients to participate in a FREE

TCO. The sites need to have a seat count between 1500 - 5000 seats.

Below are the details.

This strategic study related to messaging architectures and related

costs tied to Microsoft Exchange 2003, Lotus Notes R5/R6 and Oracle

Collaboration Suite and we need your help. Does your organization are

currently on Lotus Notes Domino R6 and have are between 1500 - 5000

seats and are based in North America?

Participants will gain an independent view of their total cost of

ownership on their messaging platforms, as well as what are the key

technical and architectural cost drivers within their environment.

Expected time commitment from the client is minimal for the value they

will be receiving from this study, and is limited to:

A day and a half of coordination time per week for 2 to 3 weeks (36

hours total),

8 hours a week for a financial resource for 2 - 3 weeks (16 - 24

hours),

4 hours each of subject mater time from 4 - 5 key managers and

technical staff. (20 hrs)

The estimate of time and effort on the clients part could vary

slightly based on their current level of maturity. Ordinarily our firm

charges in excess of $100K for such a TCO Study, however, clients who

qualify for this study will receive the TCO absolutely free.

This is not an excerise to drum up business. No sales calls will follow and no sales representatives will be notified of your participation. This is stricly an independent consulting project that we are trying to conduct.

Subject: Under Domino 6, please make sure that:

Sorry if this sound a little “pretencious”. I am aware that I am talkin with a serious company, and I am sure you already will be taken this onto account (or somebody of Lotus/IBM will suggest to do it), but please, make sure you are not missing any of this points on the TCO when talking about Domino:

  • You choose a S.O where you have not to pay for huge CAL access (i.e, Windows 2003 has a cost around 4000 $ and 40 $ for each client accesing).

  • on the comparation with Exchange, be sure you mention there is 2 versions of Exchange (enterprise and basic). The “basic” version of Domino has the feautures of the “enterprise” version of Exchange.

  • You take into account upgrade cost (see automatic upgrades on clients on release 6)as well as server upgrades (for example, how costly is to upgrade from Exchange 5.5 to 2003)

  • You chose the latest version of Domino,with the latest features (SCT, WAS for free, etc).

  • User on Domino is using the new features included in R6 for compression on bandwith and storage

  • Domino has included feautures that on other products you need to adquire (as PKI)

  • Requierements on the clients. I.E, to have Outlook 2003 it is suggested to have the latest version Office on the PC, the latest of Windows, and the latest explorer (for OWA). On Domino, on the other hand, you do not need such as requirements (on fact, you have access to web mail using a mozilla browser under Linux!). On Domino you can even use older version of Outlook and users do not realize they are using Domino instead of Exchange!

  • On Exchange, in order to use more that 1 GB of memory (a requisite to use several mailboxes), you need to install a DataCenter Edition of Windows

  • Restore & Backup costs.

  • Cluster & Load Balancings cost. On exchange, you have to had a dedicate server for clustering (pasive), not active, as on Domino. Also, you need an special version of Windows (Domino could do a cluster on whatever platform, moreover, it can mix plataforms on the cluster).

  • The fact that to do COMPRESS or FIXUP on Exchange for an individual mailbox, you need to stop the service to everyone. On Domino, you have access to the server 24 hours a day !

  • Hardware cost. On Domino, you can run services using a less powerfull machine that the required on Exchange.

  • Virus, SPAM, and Security cost…

  • Thirty party solutions you may need to add on other products in order to have “mail journaling” and mail rules.

Sure I am missing a lot of additional ones, but please, take at least this one onto account, I read a lot of TCO studied that did not. Would this study be public ? Any aproximate date?
