Meeting Accept/Decline is 'From' Internet address if Notes Client set to use MIME

I would really appreciate some help on this one if anyone has an answer . . .

We are running 8.5.1 servers and clients and have an outbound SMTP restriction to prevent relaying from internet addresses (because we don’t trust that they are always from who they say they are!) i.e. all outbound mail must come from a Notes address e.g. “Joe Bloggs/Company” not Internet address e.g. “joe.bloggs@company.com” (as we trust the Notes ‘From’ field).

Notes client mail format is currently set-up (in their Location documents, “Mail” tab, “Format for messages addressed to internet addresses:” field) as “Notes Rich Text Format” and I have been experimenting with changing this to “MIME”; it looked good to start with, but then I ran into this: If I send a rich format (fonts, tables etc.) e-mail to an external (Internet) address e.g. “consultant@outsource.net”, when I see it in the MAIL.BOX of my home Domino server, it is from my Notes name (Joe Bloggs/Company). The e-mail is routed from my home server to another Domino server that handles outbound SMTP and the e-mail gets to the Internet and is received by “consultant@outsource.net”; works fine, life is good.

But! If an external (Internet) user e.g. “consultant@outsource.net” sends me a Meeting Invite and I Accept, Decline, Propose new time etc., when I see the reply e-mail in the MAIL.BOX of my home Domino server, it is from my Internet address (joe.bloggs@company.com). The e-mail is routed from my home server to another Domino server that handles outbound SMTP and the e-mail is then refused as “DELIVERY FAILURE: Router: joe.bloggs@company.com is restricted from sending mail through server”.

If I change my Notes client (edit the Location document) Mail encoding preference back to “Notes Rich Text”, when I then Accept, Decline etc. Meeting Invites from external (Internet) users, my reply e-mail is back to being From “Joe Bloggs/Company” and does not hit the mail relaying restriction.

SUMMARY: If Notes Client is set to use MIME for Internet messages, e-mails are From your Notes address, but Meeting replies are from your Internet address.

Is there anything I can do to force my Notes Client to always send ‘From’ my Notes address and not my Internet address, even if I have it configured to use MIME format for Internet addressed messages (or is this a bug in the R8.5.1 client/Meeting Invites)?

Subject: Known issue - details inside

This is a known issue with Notes 8.5.1, reflected in SPR JGUO7XYRK4. The root cause is that we intentionally send out responses using the internet address rather than the notes address to work around an Outlook/Exchange bug that uses the From value instead of the iCalendar address. Due to issues like the one you reported, we created a fix in 8.5.2 that both sends out the addresses with the notes name in the ‘From’ value and also works with Outlook and Exchange - that fix was submitted under ADET83PNRL(not JGUO7XYRK4).

Unfortunately, there is no way to turn this behavior off in 8.5.1.

Fixes/Work arounds include:

-Modifying your server config to allow mail from internet addresses (perhaps listing the internet addresses in your domain)

-Having an agent on your server’s mail.box that modifies the ‘From’ field of such messages

-Requesting a hotfix from support for the fix delivered in ADET83PNRL

Thanks

Nate
