Our IT group is really struggling with the issue of managing database replica icons on our users’ Notes client workspaces. What will often happen is, we’ll get a complaint from a user that a particular database is “slow”. When we check their client, we find that they’re accessing the database on a remote server (e.g., in Mexico or China) without realizing it. I believe that, in the vast majority of cases, the icon has gotten added to the user’s workspace by them clicking on a doclink. For some reason, when a user clicks on the doclink and doesn’t already have the icon for that database on their workspace, Notes seems to search for the database alphabetically by server name (rather than just using the server hint from the doclink).
Does anyone have any advice on how we might clean this mess up, and manage it going forward? I know there are 3rd-party tools, such as BCC’s ClientGenie that allow for management of client desktops. Anyone have any experience with those?
FYI, I’ve searched the forums and technotes on this already for many hours, but wasn’t able to find much that addressed this. If there is something and I missed it, please let me know.
Thanks for your help,
- Greg
