Mail re-delivered - Mail journaling the culprit?

Something happened to our server that caused all mail received in the last day to be re-delivered to users.

For some reason, mail was being delivered but was staying in the mail.box. Then, suddenly, all the messages that were stuck got delivered again. I noticed this immediately and stopped the router to prevent most messages from being delivered again, but some got through twice.

Any idea why they would have remained in the mail.box? My only clue is seeing the following message on the server console while this was happening…

Router: Mail Journaling: DBUs cannot be shared between processes.

This was immediately followed by a server crash.

We’re using logging - copy to local database with a daily rollover. There were no messages in the journal from this morning until when the messages were re-delivered.

Can anyone shed some light on this strange behavior or suggest how I may be able to prevent it in the future?

Thanks,

Mike

Subject: Mail re-delivered - Mail journaling the culprit?

Michael, I have just had the same thing happen. I killed my router, copied the inbox mail to a new mailbox (for holding) and then rrestarted the router. I got the error message you list, scrolling contiuously up the screen. However, my roll-over of journal had happened at 5 AM. Users were reporting delivery failure messages for emails that the recipient had definately received. (much like you.)

Whan I stopped my router again & restarted, it settled down.

I am now watching my mail server like a hawk with a bad case of nerves!

Please share any more info you have on this problem. I will post whatever I find as well.
