All I can say is: "Don’t jugde an artwork which is still under work."Who knows what Workplace will be, maybe it will be 100 times cooler than the current Notes Client UI, and you can still code your LS/Java agents for Domino as you want.
I would have personally expected a DirectX based 3D UI for the next generation desktop, but seems it’s still too early for the big market.

I think the thing to keep in mind here is the “perspective”. By that, I don’t mean that you have to take a different view of things, but that the base product underlying the new rich client, Eclipse, can be completely rearranged to suit its current environment. (I do that now in the open-source version of Eclipse, and if a caveman like me can do it, I’d be willing to bet that someone who has half a clue can do it a lot better. You’ll have to 3D-ify your interface with SWT, Mika, but everyone needs a hobby.) The rich client will not be “portalizing” Notes unless you want it to in your Workplace-based application – it will BE the Notes client. It will also be the Workplace client. Notes/Domino will be around for quite a while as a standalone environment, but since the client platform is more-or-less universal, it will become easier to integrate Notes applications into Workplace. Not necessary, just easier.
