Lotus Notes Workspace Removal

Is there a way of deleting or removing the workspace off a client machine and forcing them to use bookmarks. We have users who insist on using the Workspace to access database the big horrible squares we want to make that unavailable to the lotus notes client.

Delete workspace from the database bookmark and change the default page to favorites or R6 basic design. You will have to add all the users dbs to their bookmarks so as to provide them an alternative shortcut to access the dbs.

The workspace is still available (@Command([WindowWorkspace]) will open it), has to be, and always should be. Most problems that a single user has with a given database can be resolved by deleting a (real) workspace icon and re-opening the database. Just because the icon tiles upset your sensibilities doesn’t give you the right to make access to the workspace difficult for your users.

I disagree, I have been a Notes Developer since R3 and its time to move on. The workspace is flat, confusing and although the bookmarks coding leaves much to be desired, some companies may feel a gentle steer away from the workspace is a good direction to take. I have to say, I can’t imagine a business decision is taken lightly on the basis of tiles upsetting sensibilities; it is more likely to be through proper consultation and future-proofing

I have definitely seen some people who believe this (that the workspace is flat and confusing and people should move away from it), and I can’t really argue whether bookmarks are better or worse. There are advantages to each. But wouldn’t you agree that there are a heck of a lot of people who seem more comfortable with the Workspace? A great many very talented and open minded Notes/Domino developers I know still use the Workplace (I do myself). A bunch more do not. It hardly seems clear that one approach is better than the other. My point, and it may be the same shared by other people who have chimed in, is that absent a fairly clear business problem with the Workspace, companies might do better to accept that different people respond better to different paradigms. Just as some people in the Windows world use icons on their desktop to launch all apps they like while others use the Start menu and still others use the task bar, different people have different ways of responding, and assuming that one way should work best, how about pointing out to those decision makers the Windows example (also true of Macs and Linux as well, I think) that multiple ways to slice and dice the same problem can be OK?

Why would you do this to people who WANT to use the workspace. They obviously find it easier. As a Notes user since R4, I use the workspace regularly. A) It has it’s own benefits. B) It’s familiar to me.

Do you want to completely ruin user’s productivity, and make them think you have nothing better to do than try to control them? Don’t make the masses hate people in our position.

Don’t bother doing this unless there’s really a valid reason.

16 July 2005They were all disloyal. I tried to run the domain properly by the book, but they fought me at every turn. If the users wanted to open the app with their urls or their shortcut key, that’s all right, let them!

The desktop icons! That’s, that’s where I had them. They laughed at me and made jokes, but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt, and with, with geometric logic, that, that a duplicate way to the nsf did exist…

Oh, Please let me add my weight to the responses you already have.

I have used Notes since R3 was a beta … I still use the workspace view because it makes sense and is a lower maintence overhead than bookmarks . . All of my staff prefer the workspace . .

Our absolute responsibility, in the world of IT, is to “make it happen for the business which pays our salary” . . . and specifically not to take away from them just because we can . . You may have a business case but I doubt reduced productivity and increased maintenance has been considered . .

Good Luck and best wishes

Simon

So, you have users who like the Workspace and find it useful, but you want to get rid of it because it does not match your aesthetic? Is there a business reason which justifies this? (There may be, but it is surprising how often these sorts of mandates have no specific business reason, but have to do with the preference of a boss or a committee)
