Subject: To Lotus Domino or not?

Hello L TYAGI,Lotus Notes/Domino is a good application development environment - it offers very good productivity. Cost of application development is less compared to JEE/.Net. It used to be best in class for Groupware applications, but recently lost a bit of market to Microsoft Sharepoint. Companies opt for Domino based application development if they are already having Domino mail system. Domino mail system is cost effective than Microsoft Exchange. This attributes very positively for Domino applications development.

Domino doesn’t support applications oriented more towards transaction processing (banking, ERP etc). Domino’s database can’t store more than 2 to 4 GB of data. Well theoretically it does, but at your risk. No comparison with a robust RDBMS system.

But then again Domino is meant for specific kind of applications only. You can’t control a rocket with Domino.

An application which takes 5 person days in JEE can be developed within 5 hours in Domino.

Answering to your question investing your career, time, energy and effort into Domino is a safe option. You will stand out from a million of JEE/.net developers. You will own a niche skill.

IBM team has recently waken up on Domino front. Earlier IBM had acquired Lotus and put this product into shelf and they had forgotten about this. But with recent versions of Domino, it’s really cool, inter-operable, XML, Java, Web 2.0 everything go in smooth into Domino.

Subject: Hmm - I have seen several way bigger databases running nicely

To me in most cases it is the amount of documents as the most likely limiting point, not what is in the document.
