Lotus Notes hate article

This can’t be good news

Subject: Not the First time and probably not the last time

people have been slamming Notes for years, and predicting that it was dead, but they continue to progress. Yes there are things that Notes sucks at. But, have you ever heard any flames about Windows sucks. I think if you were to compare the count Windoze sa bigger Sucker than Notes. That is not to say that Notes does not need to improve. I’ve been a Lotus (now IBM) BP since 1995 and the improvements in Notes/Domino in that time frame have been hugh.

Having looked at the article and read some of the stuff on ed brill, it sounds like the Guardian are using a very old notes version, e.g. notes 4.5 or something…

In a way, I agree: these old version of notes where a bit rubbish…

I just installed Notes 6.53. Its grrrrrrrreat! It has integration with Instant Messanger, doesn’t require a special password, looks nicer, has useful options like ‘follow up’ and ‘block sender’, is generally more user friendly… It’s great!

Plus, you get all the usual good stuff for developers (very good security features for example)…

I think notes was created not just as an email tool (as per many posts on Ed’s site), so comparing it to outlook which was specifically created JUST for email is non-sensical…

In summary, the old versions did suck, but it keeps getting better and better, and does so much more than outlook.

If you really hate the UI, then, you can install things to link it to Microsoft Products like word, then you’d never have to email from the Client!

If the user’s hate it so much then they should complain to their IT department and force the company to buy something different…

“Imagine a program used by 120 million people, of whom about 119m hate it.”

Could it be that the 119m who hate it are running it on a platform other than iSeries? Don’t blame the product if the users are un-educated. Those same users complain a lot about microsoft and their products too.

I agree with the article. From an administrator perspecitve (aned I do run it on iSeries), it’s quite stable, and my users understand that it is more than just email. If you want email use yahoo.

How often does Exchange crash and how many cpu footprints does it take to support thousands of users on exchange?

Put Domino on an iSeries and you’ll understand my point.

My users get what Notes is about and love the collaborative concept, but most of them loathe the Notes UI. What does an educated user community have to do with a backend platform? It’s almost as if you’re saying that if a user knows the backend is an iSeries that will somehow magically make them like the frontend that they deal with every day and hate. That’s a leap of logic I simply can’t follow. Availability is only one part of user satisfaction, an engaging, intuitive and compelling UI is another that is sorely lacking (but coming with Hannover).

For what it’s worth I run Domino on an iSeries and I’m not at all happy with it, for a number of reasons I won’t go into here because it isn’t relevant. We don’t have downtime but that doesn’t make my users like Notes.

I think when you go to a website called “LotusNotesSucks” for an objective opinion about Lotus Notes, the answer is going to be obvious.
