Hopefully someone can help with my problem, fingers crossed. We are currently implementing a Lotus Notes 8.5 client installation on Citrix XenApp 5 running on Microsoft Windows 2008 X64. The installation has gone well thanks to the new Citrix aware installation.
The problem we have is when using mailto from the client. None of our clients will have a default mail client installed on them, so will use the Citrix Lotus Notes published application.
We have configured the published application with content redirection on the .mmm URLMailto extension. However, when we click a mailto, Lotus Notes loads but errors with "Invalid Directory or Device not Ready”.
This error occurs if Lotus Notes is loaded before hand as well.
I have read that others have managed to change registry settings to get this functionality to work, but cannot find what those keys are. The only ones I can find are to do with Lotus Notes 7, and they don’t work. I also have a ticket open with IBM, but they have not been of help so far and we are desperate for this to work.
We have also now tested this issue with Fix Pack1 and 2.
Subject: Mailto:
I never had to do this until version 8.x either. But I’ve had a mixed success on these two:
-
in the CMC./DSC right click on a server with notes installed and published and refresh registry information. The file extensions will be imported into the content redirection screens.
-
If that doesn’t work you need to update the file type extensions on the citrix servers. Have a look at this:

Subject: Apologies but I have already done that
Thanks for your feedback, but I have already done that. The mmm extension is already showing, and I have ticked it and confirmed that the client is associating to PNAGENT. The Lotus Notes pubished client is loading when the MAILTO is clicked, so I know the association part is working. It is just not passing the actual mailto part and is giving the error.
Subject: Use 8.5.1, not 8.5. This is a general recommendation, and it won’t solve your prob
Subject: We are actually using 8.5.2 now
We have installed the 8.5.1 muti-user version of the client, and have users using Lotus Notes fine. We have since upgraded to 8.5.1 which has still not fixed the issue. We are really struggling to get mailto working at all! IBM do not seem to know the answer, although Citrix installations are supported.
Subject: Has anyone get any other suggestions?
We are still having no joy with this - IBM have still not got back to us about this. I can’t believe this has not been tested and its supposed to be supported on Citrix!

Subject: Thanks for these settings - but they do not work
I have tried these settings, but they have not resolved the issue. Looking into this, I think they are to fix issues with regard to Outlook?
Subject: Missing dll file
I had a similar problem and the reason was a missing dll file in the C:\Windows\SysWOW64 directory. The name of the file was: msvcr71.dll
(the Process Monitor tool from Sysinternals helped me to figure this out)
Subject: Multi-user or single user Client installation?
The knowledge base article is for a Single-user Notes client installation with user data directory on W:You don’t need it when a Multi-user client was installed, the recommended install type for XenApp since 8.5.1.
Don’t use nlnotes.exe, but notes.exe
