Lotus Instant Messaging

Hello all, I am looking for good articles on how to deploy and/or integrate Lotus Instant Messaging into an existing 6.5 Domino environment. We are a remote site with 200 6.5.x clients connecting to a single 6.5.4 either via Webaccess or the traditional Notes client. We do not have LIMWC deployed so I am unsure as to what I would need. I have been asked what are the planning & testing guidlines for implementing Instant Messaging from our environment. We are part of a larger Notes domain that to my knowledge does not employ Instant Messaging. It would just be for one-to-one chat. Thank You in advance

Hi Jim, I think this is a great step for your company. The addition of awareness and chat to your environment will be very powerful for your users.

I’d start by understanding the free entitled you have included with 6.5x via the Instant messaging and presence awareness limited use entitlement. Also read the Frequently Asked Questions.

Than take a look at the Knowledge Collection: Notes Instant Messaging

I know you mention, “just for chat”, but I think you will start to see the real value when you enable your applications for showing awareness and chat. For example, think of your HelpDesk or CRM applications with live names!

Lotus instant messaging integration: The purpose of this tutorial is twofold – to show off the new tight integration between IBM Lotus Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing (Sametime) and Notes/Domino 6.5, and to walk through an example of building instant messaging into a Notes application. The first half of this tutorial covers everything you need to know to configure, install, and use the Notes 6.5 client with the integrated Lotus instant messaging capabilities. The second half focuses on building integrated Lotus instant messaging capabilities into an existing Notes application to demonstrate not only the tight integration, but also how easy it is to do.

Also take a look at the developerWorks page for Sametime.

I hope this helps.
