I have a table that contains one field per cell that resembles an Excel spreadsheet. One of the fields contains a formula that is the sum of 3 other fields in the same table. When I added a 4th field to be included in the calculation, I get an incorrect data type error message. But if I cut and paste the same field in a different cell, it calculates correctly with no error message. I can’t see how the location of the fields in a table could make a difference but it does. Any suggestions ?

Hello,
Formulas are evaluated from top to bottom and left to right, so the position of a field is important.

Thanks guys - you were all correct. I didn’t realized that a field used in a calculation had to be located before the caclulated field. I would have thought because the fields have a specific address, ( field name), it could pull info from anywhere.
Thanks for the tip!

I believe fields are calculated from Left to Right, Top Down.So if you are trying to use a calculated field that calls a calculated field (Which has not calculated yet) below it, that may throw an error.

I’m not sure of the problem, but it sounds possible that you are running into the order of computation issue. Fields are computed from upper left to lower right, so if a field used in the computed field is below ir or to the right of it, the computed field will compute before the field it depends on. Does that sound possible for your scenario (since I don’t know which cell works and which doesn’t)?
