License Tracking in R801

FYI - I’ve upgraded almost 50 percent of my users to R801 via smart upgrade, and everyone of those users show in the license tracker as also having the designer client installed even though the smart upgrade document specifies client only and the kit itself was copied from the client only CD.

Subject: Not much luck either

Most of our client base had their Notes Client installed years ago when there was only 1 install package and you chose which components to install, client, designer, and/or administrator.

We had the same issue goint from 6.5.3 to 8.0.1. If the user started from the 3-client package rather than the client only package, they show up in licensing as designer.

Further, we are not having much luck upgrading them from 6.5.3 to 8.0.1 using the new client only install. Files are not being moved automatically to the new folder structure and even when we move them manually, we are having trouble getting the workspace bookmarks transferred properly.

When I called Lotus support they did not give me a procedure for this, they said to just keep using the 3-part install even though the users are only being installed with the client.

Check the value of the InstallType parameter in the client notes.ini. This should be set to 6 for a regular Notes client. If it is set to 0 or 2, you will get the Designer information.

Thanks Chad but that’s not practical. Smart Upgrade is supposed to (or is designed to) prevent me from having to make desktop visits, and I’m not about to send an email to users suggesting or informing them that they need to edit their notes.ini file. The install kit was copied from a client only CD. Smart Upgrade should be smart enough to know better. I’m the only person in my entire organization who’s ever had a designer client installed (dating back to R5.11).

Subject: InstallType field

Gerald,

The InstallType field provides the intelligence to determine what client types are installed on the machine. If you have this set to anything but 6, it implies that at some point, a full client install occurred on that machine. If there are any clients you have not yet upgraded, you can check to see if it is the R8 install itself that is causing this by comparing the value before and after the install. At this point, there’s just not enough information to know what might have happened.

I think what Chad is referring to is verifying a few client installs to see what client install was used for that user. If the installtype is set to a 0 or 2 that means that the designer client is involved . . . if this value is set to 6 then that means that client only install was used to setup these users.

Subject: Deprecated

If you are referring to the Licenses view in the Domino Directory, that is not license tracking. That information is also deprecated. As previously mentioned there are two “install types”- Notes only and All client. The information is based on the value in notes.ini.
