Can I kill the ncompact.exe task in Windows task manager on Server 2008 R2 without crashing Domino server?
“Tell compact quit” does not work, nor does trying to kill in the Admin client - tried to compact a copy of a mail file and it looks like it hung.
Server is live, so I can’t reboot right at the moment, though I can in a few hours.
Database compacter task is running with about 99% CPU usage currently.

A request via SPR# RGET6MS4G6 was approved in 8.5.3 so that Domino will crash when any Domino task terminates abnormally, including kill it via Task Manager:

There is a NOTES.INI parameter to prevent a crash in case of abnormal termination but it must be used just on some specific cases.
Anyway, the server must be restarted manually after added it on NOTES.INI to take efect.
My only suggestion at this time, is to wait compact finish the process or restart the server when it is possible.
After it, run an offline maintenance (fixup and updall) on this database.

Check the update task to see if it is running on the same database.
Check the backup software to see if it is running on the same database.
Check the Virus scanner software to see if it is running on the same database.
Check the ods version of database.
Check the consistency and size of database.
Check logs for bucket or idtable error.

Surprised the “tell compact quit” did not work…
If you take a couple of manual nsds and send them to me I’ll see why the compact task is not coming up for air and checking if it should be terminated. That part can be addressed… Might also be able to glean why so much CPU…
What are the Server Specs?
Sounds like you are more concerned with the CPU the compact task is consuming…
If your mail file is clustered?
Might want to look into setting the following
notes.ini
MailFileDisableCompactAbort=1
MailFileEnableDeliveryFailover=1
to help with failover… Not sure what release I added MailFileEnableDeliveryFailover=1 in so make sure you are the latest 9.0.1FP5 release…
