Japanese email illegible in Notes client, OK in browser

I have received an email from a Japanese Notes client which has garbage in the subject and body. However, if I select Actions > Preview in Web Browser > Internet Explorer, I see the subject and text perfectly. I have tried the various View > Encoding options available (like Shift-JIS, Autodetect) but this still leaves garbage.

Interesting, when I look at the source code of the browser, instead of seeing the characters that are visible in the browser screen, I see “” and “input name=“tmpWebDisplayIfEncrypted” type=“hidden” value=“The body of this message is encrypted and cannot be displayed by a browser client. Please reopen this message with a Notes Client or ask the sender for a copy that is not encrypted.”>”

Can anyone suggest what I need to do to render the incoming email correctly.

Thanks.

You list both Windows 2000 and XP as your OS, have you actually tried opening the message via Notes on an XP machine?

I would guess not because XP handles multi-lingual fonts differently from 2000, which impacts how you need to set up foreign language support in Notes.

In a Notes client on Win2K you need to set your Font preferences (Preferences - User Preferences - Basics - Default Fonts) to list a font with Japanese characters such as MS PGothic

This is not necessary on XP, you can leave the Notes Default Fonts settings alone and non-english characters will still display correctly. This is because XP uses a feature Microsoft calls soft font mapping so that whenever a character is rendered which isn’t available in the current font, the OS matches the request to a font with the right character set.

After adding Japenese Lauage Support as Nathan said, change the Default Monospace Font to SimSun.

Nathan, thanks for the post.

I have XP and W2K on the same machine, and neither renders the Japanese text correctly inside Notes, and both do in IE.

I can’t find the font you mention (MS PGothic) listed. Can you suggest where I can get this, or other suitable fonts from. Is there such a thing as a Lotus Language Pack or whatever it’s called. Where can I get this from.?
