I’d like to know if anyone has some experience with Domino 6.5.1 on iSeries 270. My client is expecting to have 1500-2000 users running Domino Web Access 6.5.1 (instant messaging enabled - other server using SSO). The iSeries will have 300 GB HDD and 5 GB RAM and one processor.
This machine will be a Server Dedicated to Domino.

The only thing you might see is CPU spikes, but it depends on the processor feature you’re using. The Dedicated for Domino boxes are tuned specifically for Domino and they are much faster than a general purpose iSeries of the same model.
I have an iSeries 270, 2GB RAM, 110GB DASD, dual processor (2454). It’s running V5R2, Domino 6.5, and 6 partitioned Domino servers. Currently I’m serving two websites from it (separate Domino servers), SMTP mail, Notes mail, and Intranet applications. I have about 200 internal users, 40 Domino Web Access users, and handle about 4,000 page hits a day between the two websites.
I’ve not had any performance problems at all, but I will be moving my inbound SMTP mail to a postfix server to get that load off my iSeries. I don’t need to, but it just makes more sense to me to do that processing offline.

We installed the domino on this server with 700 users (150 using http)… No problems… but we’re buying an 520 (Power 5) just for domino, sametime and quickplace on the same iSeries (3000 users)

I have one 270 running for around 600 users. We are not using HTTP as a task today, and response times are great today. The only problem I see in the 270, is that you can increade up to 2 CPU. If you will need an upgrade later, you will have to buy a new machine. If you use today another machine, add CPU or memory is a simple task. Think about it, this machine will never be strong enough to run HTTP with iNotes and some extra apps.

Luis, I have an iSeries 820 with about 98 gig HDD and 3 gig RAM with 4 processors. I have 150 Notes users and I host a website from it. Response times are generally good. When my company first started looking at Notes/Domino, we got a VERY undersized machine from IBM (a single processor 170). I am not sure about the 270, but the 170 was a complete dog (more like a three legged dog). You will probably not see a huge preformance gain from having lots of storage as there aren’t too many processes that are I/O dependent. Good luck with the 270, hope it works out, but be prepared …

I run an iSeries 270 at V5R1 with Domino 6.0.3 for about 400 Notes users and some moderate Domino-based Web applications. So far, our only problems have been with a DASD space shortage, and we’re adding more drives next weekend.

How’s the performance in the Web Apps ? Have you tried for Domino Web Access option ?
I think we’ll have 600 concurrent Web users (just mail)

Our biggest Web app has been iNotes Web Access. iNotes pages are a bit graphic-heavy, so if a user has a slow connection they take a long time. However, serving those pages doesn’t have much effect on Domino itself.
Most of our other Web apps are still under development, or are limited to a small number of users.
