Does anyone know if there’s a product out there that will scan emails for social security numbers inside the email?

You can use Trend Micro to scan. You can put in a regex to search for SS #'s in the body of the email. I had it working in an evaluation but they didn’t seem to be interested in calling back for the sale so we never implemented it. YMMV

Was that Scan Mail for Domino? We used to use that product but got rid of it. If so, we might have to look at bringing it back. Was there a lot of overhead on the server when using the product?

Yes it is the Scan Mail product. The product seemed to work fine but the documentation and support were not that good. The documentation does warn about certain configurations that would impact performance although I did not see any performance impact in the evaluation configuration we had.

We have Messagelabs which has a product called content control built into the spam filtering solution. It contains a regex template for SS Numbers and also Credit Card numbers. When the content is detected, it can automatically take action upon the message like quarantine, delete, log, redirect, and encrypt.

We use Ironport appliances as our MTA, robust filtering including SSN, CC numbers and HIPPA info.

Take a look at Power Tools from HELP Software (http://www.helpsoft.com). It has a tool called Find Numeric Patterns that will do what you want.
