Subject: IBM is talking about Notes and Domino 8, 9 and 10
See for instance: http://www.edbrill.com/ebrill/edbrill.nsf/dx/messaging-pipeline-analysis-the-ibm-lotus-notes-roadmap-gets-clearer-
No other vendor that I know of, talks about four future versions: 7 in beta, and discussing plans for 8, 9 and 10. And yet people keep asking if Notes is going to die soon!
Subject: Is notes going to die after lotus 9.0 ??
LOL !Who told you this ?
IBM at Lotusphere 2005 reaffirmed Notes & Domino product line continues…currently there may be plans till Notes 9, which is 5 release away (7, 7.5, 8, 8.5) which lead us to at least 5 to 8 years from now…how can one, even IBM, imagine what will happen then ! 8 years ago wesbphere did not even exist

Yes indeed, that’s a long time. The Internet didn’t really kick off until about 1995, and that’s just 10 years ago.
Subject: I really wonder about posts like this now…
This banter was fun for the last few years but it’s getting old.
Think about it, IBM alone, not counting the many millions of Notes seats, has 100,000+ users on Notes (the 100,000 number is very conservative).
So please, it’s not going anywhere anytime soon (i.e., 2-3 years)…But that doesn’t mean you stop learning, keep pushing forward and gain new skills to augment the ones you have.

Maybe this guy works for Microsoft and is acting as a mole in our comfy Notes community, spreading evil rumors …
I’m not paranoid!
Subject: Thats very conservative. More like 100,000,000+
Subject: RE: Thats very conservative. More like 100,000,000+
I believe he was referring to the number of IBM in-house seats.
Subject: Got to read a little more carefully on Monday mornings :->. Thanks.
Subject: Sounds like a press release from Microsoft…
…except they’re more likely to say it’ll be sometime next month.

What I really love about questions like this is that they totally lack historical context. After all, the current production version of Notes is 6. So we’re wondering whether the product will “die” after three future versions. Well, what was the product 3 versions ago? How many here worked with Notes 3?
Notes 3 offered only the @function language for programming. It didn’t support dialog boxes, it didn’t support arbitrary hotspots. It didn’t support outlines, or framesets, or navigators, or nested tables, or images resources, or subforms. It had forms, shared fields, views, and macros, which could be scheduled, but would never process the same document multiple times.
Notes 3 did not support any open standards except SMTP, which was linked through a gateway product. There was no web server, there was no LDAP, there was no POP3, there was no Java, there was no Lotuscript, there was virtually nothing in the way of shared programming elements.
Notes 3 is no longer supported by IBM. You can’t buy it. The closest you can get is that if you have an application written in Notes 3, it will generally work under Notes 6.
Does that mean Notes 3 is “dead?” What’s dead? A product released in 1993, that clearly no one is using anymore, and that has been extended so far that Notes 6 is arguably not even the same product, anymore than Windows today isn’t really the same product as Windows in 1993 (Win 3.1, in case you’re wondering.)
Does it matter if the technology in what we might think of today as “Notes 10” has nothing to do with the technology in Notes 6 today? If that’s 8-12 years away, what difference does it make? If Notes 9 is as different from Notes 6 as Notes 6 is from Notes 3, do you expect that it would simply fall off the face of the earth after that?
The only question is: do you think that IBM would in some way stop providing an upgrade and progress path for 110 million users? Would they get those users to a certain point, and then say “no, we don’t want to service you anymore. We don’t have anything to sell you anymore.” Do you see that as likely or reasonable or sensible in any way?
Subject: Why not? MS does it with Exchange.
Subject: Is notes going to die after lotus 9.0 ??
Yes, IBM is going to finish Notes at 9.0 and tell the 120 million users to stop sending cheques in.
Any other questions? Politics? Religion?
Subject: Do not ask, may be the guy has much more questions!
Subject: You should be asking that in the Notes 9 forum
