Is Lotus going to let me disable Sametime in 8.5.1?

  • I see this icon in my system tray that claims it’s “IBM Lotus Sametime Connect”. We don’t use Sametime … it doesn’t play nicely with firewalls according the Admin Alpha Geek, and if we manage to bypass that The Paranoids that run the firewall will freak out. So Sametime does not exist for us.

  • Yet I see this icon in my system tray, taking up space for absolutely no reason at all. I can’t use Sametime and I don’t want to see it. Period.

  • While I’m on the subject of not seeing, I also see nsd.exe squandering resources the entire time the computer is running, even when Notes isn’t loaded, because it’s a service now. Since I’ve been forced to use VMs to run multiple client instances I don’t have system resource to fritter away on processes that aren’t being used.

  • Thanks for your time…

Subject: Workaround: Windoze only

  • While trying to figure out how to get rid of that insanely retarded Outlook The Virus Propagator icon in the system tray, I learned something. Say it ain’t so! Like all workarounds this is not as desirable as simply removing offending icons, but it is a significant improvement in terms of reclaiming lost task bar space.

  • In short, enable “hide inactive icons”. This turns on the “Customize” button to the right of that checkbox. The learning is that this button allows one to permanently show or hide any system tray icon. This puts a “show inactive icons” dingus on the left side of the tray, but that dingus consumes considerably less space than the icons that are “behind” it, so the net effect is more space on the task bar.

  • Since the icons are locked as hidden or shown, the system tray never grows to consume the space that was reclaimed. Now I have about an inch and a quarter of new space, probably 150 pixels, which means that much less scrunching of the zillions of open windows.

BONUS.

  • Hope this helps…

Subject: Some suggestions

If you are not using ST then just do a custom install and don’t install the sametime part.

NSD shouldn’t have any impact on your system unless the client crashes or you have configured it to log.

You can just go into your system settings and disable it from automatic to manual. It will only launch then when the client crashes. May make it harder to diagnose issues if you do get a problem.

Subject: Thanks Simon!..

  • I’m happy enough hiding the Sametime icon as indicated. I’ve re-re-re-reinstalled R8.5 so many times I’m pretty much not interested in doing it again. Hence the question relating to R8.5.1 … I assume I’ll have to install that. (grin) I’ll do custom as suggested at that time.

  • You are correct in that the many nsd.exe (across the many VMs) are only consuming 38k each, according to Process Explorer, and they don’t appear to be getting any CPU time. I did think of one advantage to having it as a service, after posting … the host OS doesn’t run as admin and this has caused incomplete NSD logs in the past. Of course I have yet, in twelve years, to ever send a single NSD log to Lotus for any reason, so it’s hard to see how an incomplete log would matter.

  • I’ll disable it in the spirit of trimming processes and see what happens.

  • Thanks again!..

Subject: Another option.

This details how to remove the ST icon from the system tray. http://www.post1.net/lowem/entry/how_to_disable_remove_lotus_notes_client_8_5_sametime_icon_from_the_system_tray

Although if memory is an issue the custom install is still the way to go.

Subject: Nice!

  • This leads to wonder if there isn’t a flat file that would allow me to prevent ST from loading altogether? It looks like it’s a plugin, and I should be able to simply not load it. That’ll be the same as not installing it, without the hassle of a reinstall.

  • I’ll investigate that avenue based on this information. Thanks!!
