Is it possible to create File pointers / links within Connections Files / Communities?

Hi guys.

Hope you're doing fine.

Is there any way to create a pointer / link to an existing file in a folder within another folder ?

Let's say:

Folder A

File 1

File 2

Folder B

File 3

File 1 (Pointer to File 1 in Folder A, so there is a single copy of the file).

Does it make sense ?

This inquiry apply for both, Files App and Community App where files/folders are/can be created.

Use Case: We're using Connections for Storing Auditing files, and some files need to be in several folders, but then, we're having different copies of the same file as they are not linked anyway.

Sincerely,

Elvis.

Hi,

I see CNX folders more as tags, so when you upload a file to "My Files" select it and click "Add To" link, which let you select a folder to put the file in.

Here you can select the folder and it is linked to the original file.

Folders are quite funny, because you can upload multiple files with the same name to My Files when you are not aware.

So when you upload the same filename to your files you can an error, that you have to rename the file.

If you upload the same file to 2 folders, you get 2 files with the same name in "My Files" not very consistent, so be careful. ;)

Hi,

the request was if it is possible to add 1 file to 2 folders.

I don't know any way to add a file to 2 folders or create somehow a link in one folder that links to a file that is in a different folder.

In my experience, 1 file can have only 1 folder as "TAG" where it is shown in addition to the root folder where all files exist.

I would go into the direction with a wiki as a manual index of the relevant files.

This way you can upload general files once and point to them in the wiki. Other files could be in specific folders / communities.

Of course, tagging is your friend :-)

+1 I don't trust folders in Connections, users expect they work like operating system folders. Additionally there is still no trash for folders, so editors can delete the structure and no way to get it back.
