I currently run:
Domino 6.02 CF2 on my server.
Sametime 3.1 on Domino 5.0.12.
I am planning on upgrading my servers to 6.5. In order to have the Sametime functionality in the Notes 6.5 client, do I need to do anything with the Sametime Server? Is is safe to keep it at 5.0.12?
I have installed the 6.5 client on my PC, and I have used the Sametime Connect client before. However, the 6.5 Client says is cannot contact the Sametime server (but the location document is definately correct). Is there something else I should be looking at, or is it safe to assume that I have to migrate to the IBM Lotus Workplace Messaging 1.0. ?

When you say you have your ST server correct in your location document… what format do you have it in? Have you tried putting in the fully qualified host name?

That was the fix… I was using the format SERVERNAME/DOMINODOMAIN.

I used Notes Client 6.5 to Sametime Server 5.0.12 with Domino Hierachical name, and it is fine. However it didn’t work first time. It started working after a couple of restarts (Notes) now it is fine. Also only using Common Name to authenticate. Server using More Variations.

With 6.5, it inherited my full hierarchical name with /Org. I removed the /org part and used just my Firstname Lastname (or shortname if it is in your username field) and that worked for me.
