Installing Domino on Linux

Hello all,

I was looking for a guide on Domino server installation on Linux. I’m surprised there wasn’t much information on this on the internet. However, I was lucky to stumble into the post on techtarget.com here: http://searchdomino.techtarget.com/generic/0,295582,sid4_gci1253731,00.html

I have been trying to follow the step-by-step guide from the post but I haven’t been successful installing the Domino server on Linux CentOS.

There are some questions I would like to ask regarding the post. Here a they:

  1. Create a user account named notes.

Q

Must the account be called notes? can’t it be any other name? Can’t root account be sufficient enough to do what notes account can do?

2)Create a group named notes, and add the user notes to the group notes.

Q.Must this group be created and must it be called notes aswell? Can’t it be given any other name?

What’s the implication of not creating the group at all and also not naming it notes?.

Generally, what is really the essence of creating a new account and a new group? Can’t Domino be installed and run successfully without creating them?

Kindly provide any additional information that may be usefull in installing and running Domino successfully on Linux.

Here are the platforms I’m using.

Domino Server: Domino Server8

Operating System: Linux CentOS5

Thanks in anticipation.

Best Regards,

Chima.

Subject: Impact of not having group and user is… it is simply not going to complete the install/work

I am not really a Linux guy. But some things have to be done like one would do it in the very os, and AFAIK it adds up to a more secure environment, too - so where is the point about not doing it as suggested at least until you have things running for the first time?

Subject: root user should not be used

The main reason for not using the root user for the Domino process I believe is that there are security issues that could come up if you don’t.

I have never tried letting root to be the user that runs my Domino.

There could be stuff in the installation that forces you to run with a user that is not root.

Subject: User and group

Hi,

It is required to have a separate user and group. Linux is not Windows, and its user environment is completely different. In general, a default user can read everywhere in the file system and can only write in his/her own user directory and /tmp. So, for security sake you need a seperate user or use the root account. Security wise this is not an option as well.

Regarding the question about another user name than ‘notes’: it should work since you will be prompted for this name during installation. However afaik, IBM does not support any other name than notes. Also the default suggested directories must be used.

Good luck,

Marco

Subject: dom on linux

also, make use of custom start/stop scripts. there are a few floating around, I like the ones written by Daniel Nashed (nashcom).

If CentOS 5 is using SELinux or similar, you may want to disable this as it can be awkward to work with. Also, either allow nrpc thru the OS firewall (or turn it off - cough, didn’t say that

Finally, I’ve used custom paths to install the data (e.g. /local/notesdata → /notes/notesdata), but have stuck to the ones suggested by IBM for the executables.

Enjoy!

Subject: Dom8 on CentOS5

Do you have Domino 8 running on CentOS5? And you can run it without problems? What packages have you installed? Would it be possible for you to post the output of the command “rpm -qa”?

Have you done any customizing to the CentOS5 base install? I ask because no matter what I do, I can’t get Domino 8 to run on CentOS 5.2.

Subject: C++ libraries?

Did you install de libstdc++ rpm libraries? There are two that you need to install. Don’t remember them by head, but they are on de CD. Just install any rpm that start with this, is safe anyway. Was required for me to get it working.

Subject: two libstdc++?

What two libstdc++ package are you referring to? I have just one libstdc++ but two compat-libstdc++. Did you mean the compat or the normal one?

Subject: compat

You’re right sorry, i meant the two compat ones. The default should already be installed by default.

Subject: compat stdc libs

I had to load 32 and 64 bit versions (on a 64bit RHEL 5.1/5.2) to get a custom dsapi working…

R

Subject: comat

I had them already installed. They don’t change anything. Still I get the same crash as before. Would it be possible for you to post the output of the command “rpm -qa” executed on the system where you got Domino running on Linux?

Subject: RPM list

Sure, here’s the whole list. Can you specify the details around the crash you get?

Best regards,

Marco

Subject: Name and Group CAN be different from 'notes"

In my server installations i go with a set of names that are not ‘notes’. I usually settle for dominouser as the name and dominouser as the group.

If you are using CentOS and you are registering the user using the GUI, you only need to register the user. The group will created automatically, having the same name as the user.

You do not need to jump any hoops or anything if you go for a different user/group name.
