I’m working with a new client that is convinced they need to add a virtual server (though they don’t know much about the subject.)
I am finding VERY little information the the Help file regarding Virtual or Partition servers. There is very little general discussion about the concepts behind these topics, when one should consider implimenting, pros and cons, comparisons, advantages, etc.
Can anyone that can direct me to resources for more information?
With a partition server, the program documents are installed in one location and each partition has its own data directory. For instance, I can have Server1 and Server2 on one server. This is great because it only requires one server license (per processor not server). You can have up to 6 server partitions on one physical server (assuming its robust enough).
Virtual server “documents” are only used in pre 6 servers. They were used to provide an “identity” to websites hosted on the same server. Taking the partition example above, we have two servers but we can have several websites hosted on the same server. Each binding to their own IP address but sharing the same services (HTTP, SMTP, POP3, etc.). They have been replaced with ‘Website documents’ in Domino 6.
Look for “Hosting Web Sites” in Domino Administrator Help for more information.
