Inbox does not auto-refresh in 8.5.2

I have seen numerous posts regarding the inbox not automatically refreshing in versions prior to 8.5.2. All posts indicate the issue was fixed in 8.5.2, however I’m still having issues. Clients are all on 8.5.2, running XP and Win7 mixed environment. All clients are working from server-side copies of their mail files, no local replicas. File\Preferences shows Check for new mail every 5 minutes and Automatically refresh inbox is checked. I’ve tried the “fixes” from the previous versions including Unchecking the options in File\Preferences, closing Notes, deleting cache.ndk, re-open and re-enabling the options. Nothing has seemed to resolve the problem. Some of the users only have a handful of messages in their box, others have thousands. Regardless, new mail never shows up without manual intervention, and even sometimes doing an F9 or clicking the Refresh icon doesn’t even make them show up. It has to be pressed/clicked repeatedly followed by CTRL+Home / Home to get to the top/far left of the inbox. Users are receiving messages on their Blackberry devices and that’s the only way they know new mail has arrived. Over the course of 20 minutes, I’ve received 10 e-mails. All show on my Blackberry device, not one shows in my Notes in-box. I’m going to call into Lotus support for assistance but also wanted to put a post out there as I dread support calls, especially for something as simple as refreshing the inbox automatically.

P.S. - A couple of our users’ home page shows a mini in-box. That seems to refresh fine, it’s only in the full blown mail file running Composite that it doesn’t refesh

Same thing on my part…

Subject: RE: Inbox does not auto-refresh in 8.5.2

I am having some success with my testing. Per IBM, the fix was to delete the following files from my Data directory…

  1. Desktop8.ndk and any previous versions (e.g. Desktop6.ndk)

  2. bookmark.nsf

  3. cache.ndk

I was previously only deleting desktop8.ndk, however, my “Workspace” roams as I am a roaming user, so it was getting pulled back down from the roaming server every time I replicated. In 8.5, your Workspace can roam and is stored in bookmark.nsf. So they told me to remove bookmark.nsf as well. Once I removed all of these files, my in-box started to auto-refresh. My Blackberry is surely still faster, but not stuck hitting F9 every minute or two any longer. Keep in mind that if you roam and you delete bookmark.nsf and let it be recreated, you have broken client-to-server replication and the new bookmark.nsf will need to be pushed up to the user’s roaming folder in order to maintain successful replication. Hopefully this will help in getting your in-box to auto-refresh. Take care.

Subject: Scatch my last post… still not resolved

Performing the steps in my reply post made it work a couple of times, but definitely did not resolve the issue. Once again, 7 unread e-mails on my Blackberry going back over 20 minutes in time, not one automatically showed in my Notes in-box. I’m going to keep working this with IBM and I’ll post the results.

Subject: Final post - Issue resolved

I recreated my Notes.ini file and that fixed the issue. Basically I just installed a fresh client, logged it in one time, closed, stole the notes.ini and placed it in a network folder. I then pulled it down to my PC and a dozen or so users and now everyone is working and happy. IBM support said they could not find anything in my “bad” INI file(s) that would have made this not work, but who knows. From support:

I could not find anything in the Notes.ini that will stand out. The two parameters that are used for auto Refresh were set in both the INI parameters.

Hopefully generating a brand new INI will resolve your problem as well. Best of luck.

Subject: Alternate resolution

I had this problem in Notes 9 and the cause of the problem for me was that all of the settings somehow got cleared from File > Preferences > Replication and Sync. I think it happened when I upgraded to Notes 9.

In addition to having selected File > Preferences > Mail > Sending and Receiving > Check for new mail every _ minutes, the settings in File > Preferences > Replication and Sync need to be filled out too.

Perhaps deleting your ini file forced Notes to create a new one and the new settings defaulted properly.

Subject: Matthew - saw your response in the Notes 9 forum…

Can you confirm that this is a SHARED (or mail-in) database that you now have working? And not your own mail file (which should work by default).

Do you have a local replica of the shared mail file? Or is it still hosted on the server?

Thanks!

Justin,

Did you get this fixed? I have the same issue.
