Hi all,We are looking at rolling 6.5.x (prob 2) out within our firm. We have several locations with a very small connection (which is often quite busy), the question is how will IM affect this?
We will have one central IM server, so I assume all the clients must constantly contact the server to find who is on-line and who is not?
Does this generate a lot more traffic or are the packets so small and infrequent that it shouldn’t make any difference??
Thanks for any ideas!
Subject: IM Network traffic generation
From my understanding, there are two bandwidth portions of Sametime. One is the online “Sensor” that makes sure you’re still online. This is a simple packet that gets sent every minute by every connected user. That way if a user ends Sametime but has not logged out, they will show as off-line after a minute.
The other is the actual messages. These are simple text messages that don’t take up a lot of space individually. Depending on the bandwidth, the number of users and their chat frequency, it is possible that this could put a strain on the network. I have never seen it, but most of my remotes have 256k fract-T’s and that is more than enough.
