Is there a way to preserve the user’s icon preferences through the migration from 5 to 6.5?

If you are referring to the Workspace Icons:
If you copy the desktop5.dsk file from the notes directory before the upgrade and replace it after the upgrade, the workspace icons will be restored.
(This file is renamed to desktop6.ndk) after upgrade, so you can overwrite this.

Sorry, no not the workspace icons. I’m talking about Smart Icons (save, print, chat, etc), and their placement.
