chickens don’t work with Redhat only with SuSE.What also helps is to use 6.51 because 6.5 definately doesn’t work with wine

Subject: IT WORKS!
Ok, I checked out Vole’s expanded directions (vowe dot net :: Notes 6.5.1 now runs on Linux and Wine) and now have Notes 6.51 (notes, admin, designer) running. His instructions are based on the ones above. Couple things. I’ll try to be specific as a lot of people are looking for this.
Redhat Fedora Core 1
Wine 20040213 - FC1 version from Winehq.org
Dell Lattitude C400.
Distro upgraded via apt and download.fedora.us sources.
When you copy the complete install from the windows box there are a couple things to be aware of BEFORE COPYING THE FILES. Make these changes on the windows box.
Make sure the browser is set to “Notes - From Notes Workstation”. R6 looking for IE will give the red box.
Make sure Sametime is set to connect manually. If you have it connecting over the IBM protocol at startup, it will lock.
Make sure all files and folders under your notes dir on your linux box will be owned and have write access by your user.
Any custom fonts you want to use in your client must be located where wine looks for them or add the path to your wine.conf.
Couple gotchas still:
Sametime - To be honest i’m so happy about notes running i’ll use the java sametime.
Welcome page - Mine is a customized one. I forget what it’s called but you can add all of your team info and db’s to it. Gives the red box.
Performance - Kinda sluggish, but hey, it works.
Too bad I can’t post a screenshot here.
Subject: RE: IT WORKS!
It certainly does work… The piece I was hanging up on was the Internet Explorer not being found and the resulting “Big Red Box of Death”.
Eveything in Notes 6.51 works for me (that I use anyways…)… replication, calendar manipulation, and access to other custom databases we have locally. I do not use Sametime, so it’s off. I’m running Debian unstable/testing and apt-got the dev binary package from there (200401xx, I believe). Other than that, I followed the above instructions to the tee.
Performance isn’t bad at all on my 2Ghz laptop/1GB ram.
Subject: RE: IT WORKS!
HelloI still got the red box! I tried Codeweaver and Wine but the samething happens. I copied my Notes directory to Wine, copied DLL files to Windows sytem folder and entered User wite access to all files. When I start nlnotes.exe with wine, I get Notes splash screen and sign on. I then enter signon and enter, then comes redbox with the “lookuphandle” message and then wine freezes. Its not the browser problem, as explorer is installed under Codeweaver and I also tried to set Notes as default browser in location document when I run it from Wine. Any one who has an idea whats wrong ?
My linux is SuSE 9 and my Notes is 6.5
Subject: IT WORKS!..Well maybe not…
I’m also still getting the red box. I’m running RedHat 9.0 (most current maintenence), Wine 20040309, Notes Client 6.5.1.
The error is “Lookup Handle: null handle”
I have changed the browser to “Notes - From Notes Workstation” and set SameTime to manual.
All the files are owned by my user.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Michael

Re: Screenshot.
Actually, you can post a screen shot here. Just connect from your notes client, rather then through a browser, and you’ll find you can include graphics as notes rich text.
Subject: How to install ND 6.51 on Linux, a quick HOWTO
I followed the instructions. Notes work in my vmware machine. When I wine “c:\program files\lotus\notes\nlnotes.exe”
I get as far as connecting before it fails with a dialog:
File does not exist: mail6.ntf
Followed by a dialog:
File does not exist: pernames.ntf
It then dies.
I tried copying the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\Shared*.ntf
to the same directory under .wine/c
but it didn’t work.
Any ideas?
Regards,
Ian.
Subject: RE: How to install ND 6.51 on Linux, a quick HOWTO
I’ve got 6.5.1 running beautifully under debian/unstable: thanks.
Three problems, one major, two minor:
Major: when I try to open any mail with any attachment (other than a link to an internal database), I get a lot of error output, and Notes hangs. I assume that this is something to do with handling MIME types, but suggestions would be much appreciated. Let me know if it would be helpful to have the debug output.
Minor: when I start up Notes, it always defaults to maximum size for the screen, and I then need to resize it. I suspect that this is a wine issue, but I’m a wine virgin…
Minor: there seem to be far too many scroll-bars around the place - usually one set within another. Again, this may be a wine issue.
Great work, everyone.

Well, attachments are working this morning, and I have no idea why! Not complaining, though.
Subject: Mail with attachments…
Well - the latest is that it sometimes works. I’ve had it working all day at work, then this evening it was fine for one mail, and crashed on another. The last set of wine messages look like this:

Subject: RE: Mail with attachments…
The answer seems to be to downgrade the version of wine. I’ve moved back to 20040505, which currently seems better.
Subject: RE: Mail with attachments…
Downgrading wine won´t solve it. I had tested it.The only solution to that is:
Config wine to “emulate” winxp
copy shell.dll and shell32.dll to wine fake_windows/Windows/System dir
(these files have to be from Windows XP only. Using shell.dll from Windows 2k won´t work either. shell32.dll don´t exist in win2k)
It had worked for me when every settings above were done.
Can other guys out there test and confirm this, please?
Regards.
Subject: RE: Mail with attachments…
I tried your suggestion, but its even worse! Notes crashed just right after I entered password and hit the enter key! I did noticed that by putting shell.dll and shell32.dll = “native” made my notes behave this way.
by the way, what version of wine you have?
Subject: RE: Mail with attachments…
I installed lastest unstable version from apt on my debian box.I can start it, login and use it in a regular way but:
Use Notes Administrator Console
Open mail messages that contains attachments that came from Internet (attachments in e-mails received from other Notes users works fine)
Use attachment view, open. (save sometimes works sometimes not…)
All these operations result in wine crash.
Haven’t tried improve my Notes install anyway since then.
I am using notes code from a read-only ntfs mounted partition and using under windows and linux - on same box, of course - same notesdata dir, because I have such dir in a FAT32 partition.
Regards.

I followed your instructions but I am still having some minor issues. When I try and access my Address book or calendar wine-preloader eats 100% of my cpu and nothing happens. Lotus locks upi and I have to kill wine and restart.
