How to best prepare a new installation of the Notes Client?

Hi there,

after I upgraded now in several steps from Notes 12.0 to 12.0.2 FP 3 I think its time again to install the client after a NICE preparation. The client crashed yesterday twice while it was ideling and I was reading something in the browser ...

But, I don't want to lose my entier setup that takes days to restore it all. Thus I prepared my road map and intend to save:

1. Bookmark.nsf

2. In the Designer I activate under "Windows/Show Eclipse views" the "Navigator", then I try to export the General/Preferences only "HCL DOmino Designer Deployment Profiles" & "HCL Domino Designer Preferences" & Key Prefernces" & "Lotusscript Editor Preferences"

3. Make a coyp of my ID file

4. Create a copy of Notes.ini (its so messy inside hope If I only could muck out that file) that I would liek to avoid to use again.

What do you guys think ? Anything else ?

@HCL, Is it possible to save the working sets and DB's used in the Designer?

TIA

Sincerly

Jochen "Joe" Herrmann

Hi Joe,

Good day. For initial troubleshooting, you could do the below steps and see if the crash issue will be resolved:
1. Rename workspace folder
2. Rename Bookmark.nsf
3. Rename Desktop8.ndk
4. Delete Cache.ndk

Please note that we rename the first 3 items for backup purposes.

Lastly, As you have mentioned if you wish to re-install Notes client you can check the article below to prepare before re-installation process:

Thanks,

Hello

Maybe this is not the solution you are looking for. But we use roaming users. For a roaming user there is absolutely nothing to backup manually. Just install the client, configure the connection, log in and everything is pulled from the server:

- id file (from the vault)

- names.nsf,

- bookmark.nsf

- notebook.nsf

- roamingdata.nsf

- localfeedcontent.nsf

- mailfile

Settings, desktop icons etc. are restored.

Regards

Patrice

Hi Joe,

Please refer to information provided in below URLs.

1. Which Notes files should be backed up?

2. Using the NotesĀ® Install Cleanup Utility (NICE) tool

Given that the LS debugger is not great in 12.0.2, and 64-bit version is even worse, you're better off with 12.0.1 FP3 until the 64-bit LS compile in v14 is fixed. Especially if you have any 32-bit clients left in your environment. I recommend watching the recent panagenda webinar about caveats of 64-bit Designer: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/developer-special-how-to-prepare-applications-for-notes-64-bit-clients/

There is some discussion on the OpenNTF discord (in several places) of Designer and upgrades. Another great resource is MarvelClient Upgrade. I'm watching https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/how-to-perform-hcl-notes-14-upgrades-smoothly/ right now to prepare to migrate our environment

Hello Lars,

have seen the Panagenda Webinar.

We discussed the implications for our company and we will not use 12.0.2 client and above before these problems are solved.

Kind Regards and a nice weekend

Joe
