How is the MessageID computed?

Hello,

does anybody know how notes compute the MessageID in the $MessageID field?

I know that the first part is the document unique id. But what is the second part after the second ‘-’?

Thanks in advance,

I’m also interested to know how this is generated.

I’m researching a case where our Inbound SMTP gateway assigns two different messages, to two different recipients, from 2 different Internet addresses, the same MessageID at the same time.

How is this possible?

In finding out the answer, the first logical question is how are messageIDs generated in the first place.
